The lack of any (obvious to me) cell biologists in this conversation is a bit damning though... as someone who pretty actively goes back and forth across neuro subfields, it's hard to say what skills are necessary for "all" neuroscientists.

Here at Yale neuroscience, we have a few (maybe 1-3 out of ~20) each year. makes it lower probability but possible. most competitive students have experience in US labs, and they are funded by private fellowships.
