ONS data shows work and study were the main drivers of immigration to the UK in 2024. Despite record-high asylum applications (Home Office stats), only 8% of non-EU arrivals came to the UK to seek asylum.

Increase in skilled worker refusals & withdrawals after salary threshold went up

The Skilled Worker salary rose sharply last April, with the general threshold increasing from £26.2k to £38.7k. International recruitment for affected roles has fallen since the change, driven primarily by lower levels of hiring for middle-skill roles (e.g. butchers and chefs).

New data out today: asylum applications hit a record high in 2024 – 108,000, up 18% from the year before. This is more than the previous peak of 103,000 applications in 2002.

Big fall in visa grants driven by student dependants & health/care, following policy changes under previous govt Key points: ➜Health/care visas down following crackdown on sponsorship requests & ban on dependants. Main applicants fell 81%, dependants 59% in Q3-4 2024 compared to same in 2023

Headline figure from today's new immigration stats is a fall of 460,000 or 33% in residence visas issued in 2024, compared with 2023. See the immediate response to the numbers from @migobs.bsky.social ⬇️ migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/press/migrat...

Here's the MigObs press release with our assessment of the new Home Office migration stats - a dramatic fall in visas granted - mainly from a big drop in health and care and student dependants migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/press/migrat...

We'll be issuing a press release shortly, but the big news from today's Home Office migration stats is that visa grants fell by a whopping 460,000 from 2023-24 (they remain at a whopping 950,000)

Trump has proposed selling green cards US is basically already selling green cards by getting "investors" to lose some money on investments with below-market rates. It's less controversial only because it doesn't *look* like a naked transaction From my forthcoming book chapter:

How many people come to the UK on Youth Mobility Visas? In the year ending September 2024, 24,000 YMVs were granted, with 41% of these going to Australian nationals.

New data out today: ➜ Health & care main applicants down 81% since April 2024 but still not particularly low historically (Jan 2025 level = equivalent to 22,800/year) ➜ Skilled work & health/care grants seem to have stabilised post salary threshold increases in 2024

60 second explainer: how does population growth affect the economy?

New Home Office guidance bars most ppl who entered illegally from citizenship (Existing legislation – IMA – did basically the same thing in a different way. This keeps same principle in place despite proposed repeal of much of IMA) Main group affected will be people with refugee status 🧵

To access housing, healthcare or work, migrants need to prove their immigration status. Our very own @benbrindle.bsky.social explains why migrants are more likely to encounter issues proving their status when immigration rules change, in @uk.theconversation.com. theconversation.com/immigration-...

Our very own Peter Walsh was on BBC Radio 4's Today programme this morning discussing Home Office raids on unauthorised migrant workers - listen here.

The @migobs.bsky.social seminar series does not miss. Today @williamlallen.bsky.social asking: do data visualization design decisions change public attitudes and preferences on refugees? Complete with experimental evidence!

What would be the impact of Conservative proposal to increase time it takes to qualify for permanent status/ILR? Some thoughts TLDR: main impact is to generate a lot more revenue from migrants. The trade-off = increased barriers to integration due to higher costs & less secure status 🧵 below

Interesting analysis from @sergipardos.bsky.social &colleagues on factors making destinations attractive to prospective migrants in Nigeria Jobs by far the most important Tweaks to policy (eg delaying settlement or family unification by 5 years) made little difference to migration aspirations

In a letter to the Home Secretary, the Science and Technology Committee has said that high visa fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge costs affect the UK's ability to attract STEM talent. It argues that the health surcharge should be paid in instalments, rather than up-front.

Very useful overview of yesterday's bill by HoC Library. Mostly focused on law enforcement measures and the new Border Security Command. Few changes to asylum/immigration beyond repealing most of the Illegal Migration Act. commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-bri...).
