There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

“It’s a lot easier to destroy a thing than to build a thing.”

if dems want messaging help, stop telling people you're "fighting back." it sounds like you're being mugged. call off the podcaster search, take your ridiculous money pile and try opening some food banks and free clinics. hurricanes are coming and the feds have no plan. looks like an opening to me.

The US State Department warns people not to travel to countries like the United States:

I just really need everybody to understand that everything that’s happening in and to the global economy now (and all the businesses and people in it) is the entirely predictable result of the intentional decisions of one guy who doesn’t understand how the global economy works.

I think about this comic at least once a week

The Ripple Effects of Shrinking U.S. Science. Shrinking research funding will have negative effects across many parts of the scientific world, including changing the way that scientists publish their work and the sorts of science that they conduct. undark.org/2025/05/01/o...

The Boy who Cried Wolf is more insidious than you thought. See, by crying wolf over and over the boy didn't expect to get attention for the fictional wolf, what the boy was actually doing was making it impractible for anyone else who saw a real wolf to raise the alarm without looking foolish.

It probably hits me extra hard because I studied journalism and taught journalism ethics for several years. But watching the decline of the Washington Post and 60 Minutes/CBS News has been almost unbearable. They were the Gold Standard for decades. It just hurts like hell.

Politics is more clear when you remember that the "waste" in "government waste" is the profit that some rich asshole isn't making off labor in the public sector whose only purpose is the common good.

Nothing happened, and I didn’t need to know anyone. If it doesn’t break my bones or pick my pockets, people should live in the way that makes them happy.

It’s surreal how fast the United States has fallen into a dictatorial regime. Checks and balances are gone, the president disappears innocent people into foreign prison camps, words get banned, and the Overton window shifts at light speed. I honestly wonder these days when they will come for me.

What’s that saying about doing things repeatedly but expecting different results?

It is still very weird to me that there are people who were like “nah, he’s not going to do this exact thing he keeps saying he’s going to do that is contained in a 900+ page manifesto that he and his friends have been working on for four years.”

It’s weird* that the president can just decide to put a huge tax on American businesses without congress even being a little bit involved. * very unconstitutional

What is even the point of the US Congress if they still aren’t doing anything?

I'M GOING TO RUN THE COUNTRY LIKE I RAN MY BUSINESSES! ~ Dotard Jenius Trump WooHoo! He's going to run the country like he ran his businesses! ~ Republican Party Were ANY of his businesses profitable or responsibly run? ~ Americans Shut up SOCIALIST, COMMIE, LIBTARD!!! ~ MAGAts & MSM

We were cleaning Chinas clock economically. Many predicted they would surpass us by now, and they haven’t. But this tariff stuff will close the gap. Idiots

One way to think of what’s going on is that Trump & his gang are trust fund kids spending down the reservoir of U.S. power & influence without understanding or caring where the balance in that account came from. They treat it as just a fact of nature that there will always plenty there.

I don't think you should be able to openly bribe people for votes but that's just me.

Judges can't rule against him. Lawyers can't represent anyone who goes against him. Students can't write op-eds he doesn't like. Tattoos negate Due Process. Comics can't make jokes about him. Zoos and museums can't have "improper" ideology. A nazi can steal your Social Security. We great again yet?

This… it’s exactly how I feel most of the time.

No matter your station in life, there is astoundingly little separating you from those men in that cage behind Kristi Noem. No charges, no attorneys, no hearings, no trial. Just conjecture and brute force could be enough to justify completely dehumanizing you, too.

It's always wrong to vandalize personal property and that certainly includes Teslas, and also: your government is actively disappearing innocent people without due process, so, you know, that second one is taking up my empathetic bandwidth at the moment.

The fact that ICE agents are permitted to wear masks to hide their identities is, to me, the ultimate sign that US society is okay with fascism.

A clear-eyed letter from Columbia historians. “The situation we encounter today is fundamentally different from these earlier campus conflicts. Authoritarian regimes always seek to gain control over independent academic institutions. That is what we see unfolding now.”

It becomes difficult to counter lies with evidence when all the entities that compile and track empirical evidence have been gutted. This assault on knowledge is extending across medicine, science, economics, and the social sciences. This is the most dangerous censorship of all.

congratulations to john roberts who is as responsible for the current state of affairs as any single person in the country

People need to be crystal clear about something: The requirement that the government ANSWER to a court on the legal basis for detaining someone is literally the core liberty right (habeas corpus). If the government says they don’t have to do that bc “national security,” YOU can be disappeared.

QUESTIONS: If the money I earned & had no choice but to pay into Social Security, for decades, is being “privatized,” then which oligarch should I expect to receive my check from? Or are they going to keep my hard-earned money (aka stealing), then charge me for the services (“privatization”)?
