If you want to know why I drip with disgust about these companies it’s because I love technology and I hate them for what they’ve done to the computer. It has never been perfect, but four or five companies decided that it had to be this bad, and they should be treated like war criminals for it.

It only becomes apparently mysterious when we do a lot of (reflexive, sure) interpretive work on the output and tell ourselves stories that involve the machines doing anything other than repeatedly calculating a likely next word.

they don't have any connections to external services and at no point did they ever use them, this is the equivalent of it drafting an email

"One that knows about you, understands what you care about." ... so they're stating they want this thing to surveil you 24/7. Nevermind whether this useless product they're talking about would work (useless even if it did magically work) They're openly stating they're after ALL your private data.

We are told to simultaneously believe AI is so "early days" as to excuse any lack of real usefulness, and that it is so established - "too big to fail" - that we are not permitted to imagine a future without it. And since they can't deliver, they have to keep making the promise - the FOMO - bigger.

OOoh, that almost makes me want to see these made now.

This feels more like an indication of how regressive this slop generating technology is, than anything one should simply nod along to and accept.

I feel like I read that exact set of paragraphs once here on bsky. And somewhere else .. I forget where. I'm inclined to think these are just bots .. Slop boosters throwing out waves of bot accounts, again, trying to sway opinions through spam..

i've always found "LLMs have use cases!!" arguments disingenuous. It's like "but the Torment Nexus helps me with my writing". The massive promotion and funding of these things is for bad purposes by bad people and this isn't even slightly secret. But sure, you can use the anthrax bomb as a hammer.

Here is actually what is happening: braindead management is pushing AI wherever it can, launching it, laying off some people, then realising it can't replace them, then hiring back *less* people than before. AI is used as a soft layoff excuse to dress up flagging growth.

I.. wish there were a way to bring this to Zun's attention. Because .. this is something he invited.. Good reminder Xitter is a hellsite filled with pro-A"i" bots .. I sincerely hope your account gets un-suspended, your work is helpful to a lot of fans!

Bleeding edge slop generators barely even do anything better than three years ago! The only thing bleeding about them is how much they bleed whatever economy or company they get shoved in. Starmer wants to sell the UK into digital slavery, and the people are rightfully angry.

The irony there. There were plenty of forums around, and other, less grossly massive platforms, before people flocked to Twitter and FB and other platforms. Arguably, that was a better time than even peak Twitter. Many, smaller platforms, might actually be better in the long run.

That's dangerous! It sounds so good I might never come back.

Yes, many of the people off social media are too busy trying to figure how to turn these crappy chatbots that had been shoved on them off.

"on this app" you don't check other places on the internet much Even on those infested with pro-"ai"bots trying to sway opinion (X/FB/Linkedin) ... Plenty of people still say these things are stealing. If you need material to make something, you pay for it, or don't get to build your "something"

There's points?!

If your supposed "a'i' industry" can't exist without sucking another, established, much more profitable and valuable, industry. Then the "a'i' industry" is not an industry, it's a tumor. Nevermind 'killing' it, it shouldn't exist.

That.. incidentally (or not?) describes every one of the A"i" chatbots out there... (Except for the one year part..chatbot memory breaks at around 2000 words..)

A LOT of consumer-facing 'ai' are just using API calls to some of the larger service providers, few do much with local models. Very...few.

Without even BSing ... It is, really easy to deny any and all apparent utility for this stuff. specifically, slop engines, have not managed to produce anything that humans have not made already. All it does is just produce derivatives. It's just that machines that facilitate laziness are attractive.
