Massive economic difficulties has usually yielded interesting results in times of rising conflict and authoritarianism.

“[…] And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, they then will struggle against that peace and prosperity, and against democracy.”
It was mocked for years but feels incredibly prescient now.

Quoting Fukuyama in 1992:
“Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a just cause because that just cause was victorious in an earlier generation, then they will struggle against the just cause. They will struggle for the sake of struggle.”

Did not serve the US at all.
Might have served Trump, if he gets the chance to show the world what happens when someone refuses to grovel.

That was me, but Elden Ring. I absolutely see why people love it. I just don’t have the hours for it.

It worked very well for Assassin’s Creed.

I’m against the deployment of Russian troops in Ukraine.

Well, agree to disagree on all those examples. They looks straight out of art school to me, all bold intention, no balance or obvious substance.

The sentences “this looks like a PS2 game, it’s awful” and “this looks like a PS2 game, it’s amazing” are both valid criticism in different contexts and for different titles.
Nostalgia is fine but some stuff was genuinely bad and ugly back in the day.

This feels like a meme that has probably been around for 150 years

As I recall WC1 was basically unplayable even at the time WC2 came out. I tried and gave up immediately. Enormous jump in quality. But that’s how things went back then.

Write it, compile the rejection letters, then publish them together as a book.

Which is, like… not the *most* progressive part of Europe.

I suspect the average American might be in favor of at least some of the immigration moves.
Doesn’t mean it will help them, or that it’s the right thing.

In this day and age of anti-woke activism, I doubt any major publisher would want to bet billions and billions on a female lead that isn’t hot. Depressingly.

Yeah. I guess some people prioritize gameplay and interactivity and reject the norm that narrative in games is largely passive.

A male director could probably do a mom game, but might feel more comfortable captaining a female perspective. And rightfully so, probably.

There are comparatively few female creative directors in AAA. The few there are are most likely acutely aware that they cannot get away with acting too feminine in that role. Female directors tend to be tougher and harsher than male ones, in my experience.

Some games are actively worse if you pay attention to the story.

I guess we shouldn’t be wishing people happy birthday, then. Given that it’s hardly necessary.

Granted, we still have to tone down stuff like that for e.g. Russian or Arabic localization, but at least then we can do it tastefully. So that natives understand what we’re saying even though we’re not saying it outright. Very difficult to get right within the limits of the laws.

I bet your that community translation for games I worked on would cause flame wars about the LGBTQ content. I’d rather not have Nazis get to translate my writing.

$85 USD today is equivalent to $60 USD in 2010. Perfectly fine to prefer indie games but don’t fall into the boomer mind trap of thinking all price increases are nefarious

I think any European Genxer would reflexively recoil if they found themselves having made this sort of gesture. It’s incredibly taboo for the whole generation.

European here, so different electrical plugs, but I've felt for a while that newer ones seem to be made to higher tolerances and sometimes require more fiddling and force to plug in.
That said, I'm also in my 40s and I'm not sure it's not just my eyesight and coordination going...

That tracks. Extra poor timing to get sick, then. Best of luck with getting settled.

I assume these are tiny projects in a big company, a kind of skunkworks investment to be well positioned in case the concept takes off.
Even so, I feel the PR cost of releasing them might be higher than the financial gain.

…how in the world do you not have a pen and no one to ask for a pen? Are you in a foreign hostel or something?
