Political tensions are threatening the future of the largest freshwater ecosystem on Earth.

Good article to consider. It has been estimated that every taxpayer dollar spent on science eventually grows the economy (and our well-being) 40 to 50 times more. Whether you understand the basic research or not.

NOAA terminates space, climate and marine life advisory committees Experts caution the groups play a key role in ensuring agencies use the best available science in their decision making. www.govexec.com/management/2...

This is absolutely devastating. "The University of Maine System, which oversees Maine Sea Grant, said it was notified Friday night that NOAA was terminating a four-year agreement for funding, leaving 20 employees and the Sea Grant’s programming in limbo." www.pressherald.com/2025/03/01/m...

"downsizes" is a weak way of saying "forced to cancel dozens of programs, which jeopardizes future STEM careers of talented undergrads" @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

"Many of my good friends have their funding withdrawn or frozen based on the DEIA wording such as 'diverse microbes'" a scientist reliant on federal research grants told me, adding NSF proposals with terms including 'disabilities' and 'female' have been put on hold

⚠️ Effective Monday 2/10/25, NIH indirect rate capped at 15%. Applies to existing & future grants. —> Deep budget cuts & program closures coming to a university near you. Is this the break the glass moment for university administrators who have been silent so far about the attack on science?

NEW — DOGE now has full access to HHS Payment Management System, I’ve learned. The system distributes almost $1 trillion per year in grants (largest in the govt) and supports all of NIH, CDC + many other public health initiatives. Musk guy Luke Farritor is actively delaying payments to recipients.

25%-50% cuts to NSF www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

Elon acolytes targeting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “It’s been a longtime goal of corporations that rely on Noaa data to prevent the agency from making the data public, instead of giving it directly to private corporations that create products based on it.”

The US National Science Foundation, a major funder of basic academic research, has reopened a website that distributes money from research grants to scientists https://go.nature.com/4hhd5Aq

An employee working for an agency funded by federal grants working in HIV care just told me that their manager said the CDC website is expected to come down "in its entirey" and "to save what they might need." Targethiv.org, run by the Health Resources and Services Administration, is already down.

One scientist texted his landlord to say his rent would be late. Another wasn’t able to pay her credit card bill. Yet another worried how much longer he could afford his mortgage. These were some effects of Trump’s federal funding freeze on researchers who rely on National Science Foundation grants.

This is my college roommate's dad. His campaign was clever, well-organized, and clearly effective. Other Democrats could learn from him. I hope the DNC takes note.

I'm being told that despite the court order pausing the Trump administration's funding freeze, the NSF is still pausing all payments of funds for open grants while they review awards that could be impacted by EOs.

Dear fellow scientists, Go talk to the press about what is going on. Talk to local news about how it will impact jobs. Be specific, but don't pity yourself. Instead focus on how your own situation affects local jobs, the national economy, beating the growing scientific race with China. Suggestions:

Who's holding their breath to see if NSF is next?

A reminder that applications for our summer research internship (paid) at NOAA GFDL are due in a few weeks! My project will involve looking at local extreme rainfall in new high-resolution versions of the SPEAR Large Ensemble climate model. ➡️ See more at: cimes.princeton.edu/education-ou...
