FEDERAL RESEARCH LAB SCIENTIST IN 1965: After five years and seventy million dollars we have invented a new type of plastic that prevents communists from being able to climb ladders too fast FEDERAL RESEARCH LAB SCIENTIST IN 2025: My cure for cancer was shelved because it might benefit Hispanics

And here's the infuriating part: most major outlets don't allow noting funding sources, per editorial policy. Here's a recent exchange I had with an op-ed editor at a major outlet about that point (my request was not granted). Recent events show the need to change these editorial policies...

At least 12 universities now have hiring freezes and nearly 30 have cut PhD admissions this year If you hear of other places you can add them to this google doc:

A few people have kindly lobbed this into the tl, but here's my own gift link: Me, in NYT Opinion, arguing we're not failing to handle H5N1 flu in cattle because the response is based on plans for bird flu in poultry and doesn't match dairy farming structures. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/o...

As always, @chriswarcraft.bsky.social is a real one.

Without #NOAA data it is virtually impossible to make highly accurate regional & local weather 🌦️ ❄️ ⚡ forecasts. Most founding fathers kept #weather records. Many of the oldest US weather stations are at old family farms. NOAA is literally more American 🇺🇸 than apple pie, which originated in England.

My mom's involved in a women's group in a red state and I tried to summarize whats been going on in science for them. One action item shared: If you're eligible (10-40yrs), go get your HPV vaccine. You don't have time to fight cancer, you've got fascists to defeat!

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

Alright I’m back. This is a really disingenuous characterization of the situation. So first, yes the primary source of avian influenza are ducks and geese. Who have pretty big migration patterns making it fairly easy to spread virus far and wide.

DOGE recommended firing workers at: -FDA, which oversees Neuralink -FAA, which oversees SpaceX -USAID, which probed Starlink -CFPB, which oversees Tesla's financing arm and a potential payment platform on X. "Conflict of interest" is a severe understatement.

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.” I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

Kinda cheesy, rather pink, and late for Valentines' Day, but hopefully my mother will appreciate.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

In 2021 we had virtually no flu cases bc people were masking everywhere. We CAN beat this. We CAN prevent this. We have the tools and the protocols.

Doing the unthinkable: The deep cuts to the #CDC's workforce today are expected to decimate the Epidemic Intelligence Service, a program that has trained public health rapid responders for decades. Envy of the world. Poof! www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

Devastated by layoffs in the National Parks and Forest Service. My brother has served in both #NPS and NFS, does the kind of work that is DOGEd. Here, scaling a dead tree to take the top off before cutting it down. Essential maintenance to protect park goers and contain fires. @altnps.bsky.social

Let's learn about Dr. Ruth Ella Moore, possibly the first Black woman to earn a PhD in the natural sciences, first Black person to earn a graduate degree in bacteriology. She grew up in Columbus, OH daughter to successful artist Margaret Moore.

#medsky#pedsky#idsky#immunosky 🧪 In the midst of all of the scary headlines recently, I thought I could take a moment to share a bit of good news: for the first time in history, a malaria vaccine with >90% efficacy seems to be within reach! Here’s why that’s a really big deal for EVERYONE 🧵

Posted with alt text bc I fricking love this. No I couldn't find a pronunciation

RFK, Jr. is not a "vaccine sceptic." He is a vaccine denier. He is anti-vaccine. Do not capitulate to their newspeak.

Dems should propose a law that immediately requires every fed agency to post on @bsky.app account, every outlay with a detailed description, $, and a link to existing gov sites with in depth details Rather than trying to keep Elon out, pre-empt him so he cant miss characterize spending.

Harold Amos was a pioneering molecular biologist who mentored hundreds of minority scientists. He was inspired as a boy in New Jersey by a biography of Louis Pasteur & decided to be a scientist. He graduated Springfield College 1941 summa cum laude in Biology with a chemistry minor.

“Our ethical obligations do not vary according to the whims of politicians. We must forcefully take a stand against these profound violations” It feels fitting that this is my first publication since getting tenure; it is my duty to speak up. So grateful to @martinmckee.bsky.social for co-authoring

Today's nice results from @towsonu.bsky.social micro class. First time streaks for single isolates. So proud.

It's #SuperbOwlSunday. Time to pull out this awesome #AgarArt from a couple years ago.

Your Action Is Needed! Congress needs to hear from scientists. Call your representatives to oppose funding freezes and restrictions on research. Find contact info at govtrack.us and make your voice heard today! #SciencePolicy www.ascb.org/science-poli...

Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic. globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

not paying indirect costs for research is like only paying the players in the Super Bowl. can't have a Super Bowl without coaches, referees, security, janitors, announcers, stadium staff, and a stadium - and you can't have research without supporting people and facilities

What people usually miss is that this is not just about health and disease. There is a very close connection between health and wealth, individually and at society level. A society that gets sicker will get poorer. Which leads to worse health and so on.

In just over 25 years, inventions from universities + nonprofits drove $1.9 trillion in gross output for US industries, contributed up to $1 trillion to the US GDP, and supported about 6.5 million jobs. This isn’t just research for research’s sake-it’s real economic impact on a national scale.

Yesterday was World Read Aloud day. In "Wild" Microbial Biotechnology we set up MudWatts - microbial fuel cells. So we had to read Where the Wild Microbes Grow about deep sea microbes and MFCs - funded by NSF ages ago. #picturebooks4college www.kevkurtz.com/where-wild-m... 🦠🧪🍎

If you're concerned about changes you've seen at ASM, I recommend reaching out to [email protected] to let them know. @asm.org says they're still committed to their core principles, which include "policies that embrace and promote equal access and opportunities in science for all" bit.ly/4hIk9Gc

An important lesson here for other scientific societies weighing what to do, especially if the focus is minimizing risk to the org (rather than upholding values). ASM’s apparent self-censoring is reducing some kinds of risk, but generating many more long term risks to itself.
