If Trump was President in 1940

I wrote this before the Oval Office performance, but really, there is nothing to add. It's all still true.

Lower urban speed limits save lives, the evidence is in and they work. If you oppose lower urban speed limits you oppose measures to reduce deaths on our roads. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH34...

Former PM of Australia tells #Newsnight that Donald Trump ‘is a bully’ and if you ‘stand up to him’ you can ‘win his respect’ Malcolm Turbull has some advice for Sir Keir Starmer ahead of his meeting with the US President …

Think solar farms are bad for nature? Think again. Those designed for nature in East Anglia are teeming with birdlife - including threatened species. A new study reveals why. ⤵️

NEW: updated long-run gap in voting between young men and women in Germany: Gender divide continues to widen, but contrary to what is often assumed, young men continue to vote roughly in line with the overall population, while young women have swung sharply left. www.ft.com/content/29fd...

Once upon a time, some villagers came across a large, ornate wooden box in the local woods. On the side of the box was a message: “Whatever money you put in this box will, in future, grow to become 2.5 times larger.” 1/

For measles virus and the vaccine, it's a no-brainer. It's ridiculously infectious, R0~12-18. It's s a killer. >107K in 2023, mainly unvaxed kids in LMIC. Vax prevented ~60M from 2020-23. It also kills memory B cells, so no "natural immunity" for "healthy" immune systems🤦‍♂️

When it comes to false claims about vaccines and autism, it was never really about the wellbeing of the population and whether vaccines were safe - fundamentally, it was about whether the alternative could be profitable to the people promoting nonsense:

The destruction of US science is now in full swing. Literally sickening.

Sometimes people ask why I advocate for greater investment in active travel. One massive reason is that I was lucky enough to go to Kesgrave High School. I experienced transport independence as a child. And I want that for my children, and others. #activetravel @chrisboardman.bsky.social

The ban driven grouse shooting petition has passed 63,000 signatures. Plz add your name here if you want this discussed in parliament petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70... I wonder whether we can get to 66,666 by 21 Feb- that would be half way in time and two thirds of the way in signatures.

Reminder how valuable the land around our transport networks is for nature: “There are 313,000 miles of rural roadside in our nature-poor country and verges like this one offer reservoirs for recovery” Article also acknowledges harms caused by vehicles & that nature is often competing with litter

A few rich men and their acolytes are tearing the US apart

Just a reminder that Cardiff University is proposing to cut 400 academic staff and drop nursing, ancient history, modern languages, music and religion altogether - while opening a new campus in Kazakhstan at the same time. Yep. Me neither. 🤯

Hear me and rejoice. The diff in diff gods continue to smile upon us. NIH indirects only unscrewed for institutions in the plaintiff states

Destroying America’s vaunted biomedical and scientific enterprise to own the libs

🔥 Well... this is now over 88,000 signatures! Just one final push to get it over that magic 100,000 and get a parliamentary debate? Why not! Link --> petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

This is a catastrophe

Pine Martens, who not long ago were at risk of extinction, are starting to make a slow but steady recovery in numbers. ⬆️ Wallington Estate has been named as a safe ‘haven’ for the rare mammals to begin to rebuild and recover! 🌳 Read more about the project here:

In light of today's devastating announcement of a 75% cut to NIH overhead, it scarcely seems newsworthy that couple dozen COVID contrarians are cosplaying PNAS. But two of them are slated to lead the NIH and the FDA. Is this how they'll stand up for science?

Massive implications for universities in the USA if this NIH directive goes ahead. Biomedical research in particular is likely to suffer.

1. I know this will cause me trouble, but it dismays me to see fellow environmentalists dismissing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) out of hand, in some cases clearly before they have understood the technologies involved or their potential uses. 🧵

👏 “After one year of the zone, nitrogen dioxide from traffic was lower, GP visits for respiratory illnesses were down by 25% and those for heart problems decreased by 24%”

“54% of Britons who voted leave, including 59% of voters in “red wall seats”, said in exchange for single market access they would now accept full free movement for EU and UK citizens to travel, live and work across borders.”

I meant to get this out earlier but the weekend had an insane tsunami of work and I finished this one last night. RFK Jr. said something deeply alarming during his HELP committee hearing (that really narrows it down, huh?) and I wanted to take a minute to explain: open.substack.com/pub/deplatfo...

Well done Greater Manchester! Now reaping the rewards of your consistent investment in 🐝 network: walking up from 52% to 57% & short car trips down from 41% to 36% in the last 5 years. Residents confirm the 🐝 network is enabling them to walk or cycle as part of daily lives. 👏

Been reading through the Government's new Land Use Consultation. Here's the juiciest bits I've seen so far! An excellent, bold proposal to spare 9% of England's least-productive land for nature & carbon - restoring peat bogs & regenerating woods - & changes to ag land use over a further 10% /1

Farming, nature, green infrastructure - for too long land uses have been left to solve the jigsaw of England without a guiding plan🧩 There's now a chance to give the right players all the pieces they need for nature, sustainable food production & green infrastructure🏞️ www.gov.uk/government/n...

The gamebird shooting industry once again sticking up two fingers to the rest of society. #Ornithology #UKBirding #BirdFlu raptorpersecutionuk.org/2025/01/28/s...

Anybody surprised? The Hen Harrier remains one of the most persecuted birds of prey in the UK, mostly killed on or close to grouse moors. #RaptorResearch #WildlifeCrime #Ornithology #UKBirding raptorpersecutionuk.org/2025/01/29/t...

A continuing scandal in the UK and Labour Govt seems content to let it continue. #RaptorResearch #Ornithology #WildlifeCrime raptorpersecutionuk.org/2025/01/30/1...

“Tesla sealed a second consecutive year of declining profits in its fourth-quarter earnings report Wednesday.” www.forbes.com/sites/dereks...

YouGov find just 30% of people think we were right to leave the EU. The lowest number yet. Just 10% of 18-24 year olds think it was the right decision.

Caroline Kennedy's letter opposing RFK Jr.'s nomination to lead HHS is one of the more scathing things I've ever read.

EU medicines agency quits X & moves to Bluesky "EMA will no longer post updates and content on X. We believe the X platform no longer suits our communication needs” the agency said in a statement www.reuters.com/world/europe...

This is what 180 years of progress looks like! I've reproduced and updated this beautiful chart from @ourworldindata.bsky.social showing life expectancy in England and Wales at different ages, since 1841. The data largely speaks for itself but I'll make a few brief observations. 🧵

Winter pressure coming off properly now.

Of course, the real question here is "Why on earth are cyclists being expected to share space with pedestrians?" We're not having a chat about how people in cars have to slow down and give a little toot as they squeeze past pedestrians, are we?

Cyclists cannot win. For every "I want you to ring your bell at me" there is an equal and opposite "How dare you ring your bell at me"

Mortality based on death registrations reached a new low in 2024, just beating 2019. There was a change in the registration process in Sept though that introduced a slight delay - without that it's likely registrations would have been slightly higher, but still broadly in line with 2019.

I have struggled with how to respond to Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook's descent into toxic masculinity and Neo-Nazi madness. While I have thought about quitting Facebook, I find great value in the connections and friends I have here, and it doesn't seem fair that I should lose that 1/4

Some media do demonise those who cycle and that dissuades some from cycling and builds hate from others. Chris is right that the media should be a lot more positive about cycling. www.theguardian.com/news/2024/de...
