Been reading through the Government's new Land Use Consultation. Here's the juiciest bits I've seen so far!
An excellent, bold proposal to spare 9% of England's least-productive land for nature & carbon - restoring peat bogs & regenerating woods - & changes to ag land use over a further 10% /1

2027 20% tax on Fertiliser
🙄😬🤷♂️
Of course that grade A1 agricland that will need to be worked harder also represents the most productive land historically so will contain signif remains
So consultation asks what new policies are needed, particularly about giving new powers & funds to National Parks & National Landscapes:
- Consults on whether major landowners should report on climate adaptation measures. I think they should also report on what they're doing for nature & carbon storage (an 'Ecological Domesday Survey' as proposed in my book)
I think these new powers must allow for land purchase for environmental reasons - imagine communities owning rivers, woods, natural flood defences
How do we ensure this doesn’t get watered down by the inevitable defensive challenges from CLA / NFU / et al?
