I believe we have breaking news in Inside Medicine. I spoke to a member of the FDA vaccine committee who confirmed that the meeting to decide the 2025-2026 flu shot composition was abruptly canceled today. My on-the-record Q&A with the FDA advisor: insidemedicine.substack.com/p/scoop-fda-...

So much for fighting cancer and heart disease. “The new administration has, both in broad strokes and in rather backroom bureaucratic ways, stopped the processes by which the N.I.H. funds biomedical research in the nation,” said Vaughn Cooper, a microbiologist at the University of Pittsburgh.”

Another shakedown: U.S. negotiators pressing Kyiv for access to Ukraine's critical minerals have raised the possibility of cutting the country's access to Elon Musk's vital Starlink satellite internet system, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

I have a NYT essay out this morning. There is very little that Americans can agree on these days. Not religion, not sports, and certainly not politics. But there is one thing nearly everyone agrees on: Vaccines are good. (Gift link) www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/o...

On hold at the CDC: An analysis suggesting that flu cases *may* be at a record high. That could mean a surge of deaths comes next. The CDC is delaying analyses to inform the situation & has cut off usual communication w/hospital networks & WHO. My latest: kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

USAID staff abandoned: "If my colleagues were kidnapped in the next day or two, they don’t even have the help button on their phone. If I had a colleague that was in West Africa and had someone from ISIS go and take them, they couldn’t even let the [special security] know that they’ve been taken."

The United States by virtue of a bipartisan commitment to biomedical research created one of the most vibrant, productive research ecosytems in the world. People came from all over to study here, do research here. It was a monumental accomplishment by both parties. 1/
