The UCP's second attempt to dress up the Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act with a motion to give the illusion of meaningfulness, is, as the authors conclude (after patiently explaining why), simply "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." #cdnlaw #canlaw

It is great (and important) that judicial vacancies are getting so much attention. We undoubtedly need vacancies filled. But to say that the backlog in crim and civil cases are wholly about judges misses the forest for the trees. There is a larger resources (fed + prov) problem to fix.

New favorite sticker.

If there are any criminal or family lawyers who need some advice/support assisting a client with FASD, I am happy to help. I have tons of experience. This is a good resource. I was one of the organizers/presenters. canfasd.ca/wp-content/u...

One of my favourite things about reading John Grisham is that in every book so far, there’s a main character who is in recovery. And it’s not the standard ‘chaotic alcoholic for spicy plot’ trope, it’s understated, quietly reinforced, subtly mentioned, and they’re usually One Of The Good Guys.

Why didn't they just put the photos inside a glass case that only the manager can open

A doctor’s letter to United Healthcare for denying nausea meds for a child on chemo

Avid hunter and Minister of Parks and Forestry just happens to expand hunting and his family just happens to run an outfitting company that would benefit from this. Totally normal grifter shit Alberta.

Exciting! Looking forward to little Devin Dreeshen's announcement to defund police forces and municipalities across Alberta! Get ready for more property tax increases thanks to UCP defunding measures! #abpoli #ableg #yyc #yeg #reddeer #fortmac #gprairie

We don't need more remakes of old movies. We need more MUPPETS remakes of old movies.

My remarks at the Fall conference of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association on R. v. Bykovets, 2024 SCC 6, and search and seizure of IP addresses.

We have a politicized policing problem in Alberta when we have police services that target journalists such as @duncankinney.bsky.social and progressive elected politicians (as she then was) such as @sphillipsab.bsky.social. We need far more accountability.

Xmas tree is up. A bit small, but you can hardly tell....right?

Damn and now Drake is going to have to pay a 25 percent tariff on that beef?

John Cleese for the win

The BEST account to follow. Hands down.

NEWS: Justice Yake just offered Lebessis a qualified apology and said he won’t cite him in contempt. Still had strong words about him leaving court, which Yake said he’s never seen in his decades in practice.

NEWS: A Red Deer judge whose dispute with a defence lawyer ended in the latter being jailed admitted he should have done more to “de-escalate” the situation. He offered a qualified apology to the lawyer and declined to cite him with contempt of court.

New from me: a defence lawyer in Red Deer spent 10-15 minutes in jail after a dispute with a judge in court. He's accusing the judge of bullying and intimidation and says the practice of jailing lawyers should be abolished.

I’d rather share the bathroom with a trans person rather than someone in a MAGA hat.

Hard agree.

Nothing like a hammock to remind you how overblown your sense of athleticism is

i never ask “how’s everybody doing tonight” between songs because i already know the answer is “woo”

Remember that libraries are proof that not every goddamned thing needs to be “for profit.”

If a Civil War breaks out, meet me at the library. They don’t know where, or what it is!

Nothing to see here. Just my UCP taking more steps to control municipal police forces to ensure we don't have political upheavals as we move towards authoritarianism. That's all. #abpoli #yeg #yegcc

This ABlawg post by Collin May challenges the position taken by Shaun Fluker in his "UCP Grievance Politics Takes Aim at the Law Society of Alberta" post. The former wants reform to focus on the public interest; the latter for it to be free from ideology. The two aren't necessarily incompatible.

Looking at you Alberta. 👀 #ableg #abpoli

Alberta man sues province over closing of only supervised consumption site in Red Deer: Aaron Brown says the province’s move to close the site violates his Charter-protected rights and will put his life at risk

If governments adopt policies that put lives or health at risk, and do so contrary to principles of rationality, necessity or proportionality, they are violating s.7 of the Charter. Governments that close life-saving services without persuasive evidence-based reasons should face s.7 trouble in court

I am not asking you to make out with Trudeau. I too, would like to kick him in the shins. But I am asking you don’t let your irrational anger convince you in an emotional state that Pierre Poilievre is an option.

The Republican brand in a nutshell.

Every year we go to a store that has a giving tree for low income seniors. You take a paper ornament off the tree and on the back it has a name and 1 or 2 things they'd like. Once you have a gift for them, you take it to the store and they deliver them! It costs little but means a lot. #FeelGood
