I chatted with a program director at NIH for a half hour just now It's clear that the people who make American science happen are doing everything they can to keep making it happen in a very difficult environment They deserve our respect and gratitude

This is very important and concerning. The NIH funding freeze is *still in place*. NIH can't issue new awards if proposals aren't approved by Council. OMB is using a technical work around to prevent these meetings from happening. NIH can't post meetings, so they can't actually have them.

BREAKING The Trump administration is maintaining a funding freeze at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in defiance of two federal court orders. The ongoing freeze was confirmed by an NIH official and internal correspondence reviewed by Popular Information.

The US plans to cut billions in reimbursements to medical researchers for items such as hazardous waste disposal.

On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Increasing pregnancy risk, destroying public education, eliminating no fault divorce, ruining the economy, promoting misogyny, and removing social safety nets seems like a weird way to make marriage and having children appear enticing to women. #GOP #FamilyValues

I haven't found corroboration of this exact list yet, but this does appear to be legitimate, per Nature. Apparently "around 10,000 research grants have been flagged for review and distributed to various programme directors"--in OTHER directorates. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Warren: "He can stand there, smile at you and say, 'anybody can vaccinate their kids who wants to,' but he literally could bankrupt the vaccines manufacturers with the power he will have. And since he's got a financial incentive to do that, we cannot trust him in that job."

Jim Acosta announces on air that he's leaving CNN and says, "it is never a good time to bow down to a tyrant ... don't give in to the lies."

If CBS settles this BS case, the money they pay Trump will pale in comparison to the drop in ratings they will experience.

Diversity in clinical trials is about health, not politics. The major of research in the past was done on (mostly white) men. If trials do not have a diverse pool, the results are not broadly applicable.

While attacking trans people, by redefining male & female, Trump also quietly gave personhood to embryos “at conception”. They are coming for abortions people. Be ready. They gave it back to the states & didn’t like the results. #abortion #prochoice #trumppolicies #project25 #Americaisonfire

With everything so seemingly terrible these days & no sign of anything remotely hopeful in the near future, I thought you might need this photo of a baby giraffe.

Modern medicine erases the child mortality horrors depicted in 19th-century literature. In the 1800s, ~50% of U.S. kids died before the age of 5. One scholar warns that undermining #vaccines risks bringing those tragedies back https://buff.ly/4g68i4c (@aktange.bsky.social, Macalester College) 🗃️ 🩺

Every time I read about banning books, I think of this: Reading a book with a gay character will not make you gay any more than reading a book about Einstein will make you a genius. If you're afraid that books might change someone's thinking, you're not afraid of books — you're afraid of thinking.

Yup.

Deactivating my Twitter account was hard. Not bc I loved X (that made it easy to cancel) but bc I mourn the loss of old Twitter & what it used to be. Bluesky is reminding me of early Twitter days & I’m here for it. I’m hoping the scientific community jumps on board.

Anyone else remember when Dr. Oz said that it was fine for 2–3% of schoolchildren to die? Yeah, he’s in charge of Medicaid and Medicare now.

We have seen an incredible erosion in the ability of physicians to set the norms and standards. Instead, judges, politicians, and activists — many without any medical training — have substituted their own judgment for what is appropriate medical care. www.statnews.com/2024/11/07/t...
