TERPSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Latest from us looking at enzyme secretion in the wood-eating bivalve (shipworm) endosymbiont T. turnerae. Symbiont enzymes are required for the host to breakdown lignocellulose components. However, the symbionts are not located at the site of digestion! How do their enzymes get there?

Fucking wild that there’s a Getty image of the hand written ad Trump read for a car company headed by the richest person in the world, and just so happens to wield the most power in this administration, and all the WaPo can muster is “critics said”

My commutes: 🤬 1 hour car 🤩 10 min walk 😎 15 min bike 😊 20 min walk 🥳 10 min walk 😡 30 min car 😠 20 min car

I know this is extremely vulgar idealism, but I do think we should try to aggressively reassert the norm that lying is bad. Not in a "Four Pinnochios" fact-checking kind of way, but in a way that frames this kind of lying as moral degeneracy that is fundamentally corrosive to the human spirit.

Where are all of those people posting pictures of their groceries and bills from last year?

What’s amazing here is “DEI has failed” is “you haven’t convinced me that minorities should have access to education and employment”

NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated. The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west). My column: www.ft.com/content/3046...

Terrible time for bad Liverpool to show up

Speaking of normal and fringe. Has there been a public accounting of all the analyses and opinion pieces from the last 5-10 years that insisted that it was the Democratic Party moving away from their center and not Republicans?

The concentration of private wealth and political power in so few hands with so few guardrails could pave the way for Trump’s campaign backers and allies to reap massive financial benefits on a scale not seen since the Gilded Age.

Waking up to cold weather again after a couple of nice days

As long as Elon Musk is running his mouth about Social Security—which he appears to be trying to understand in real-time—I’ll note that DOGE has yet to find a single instance of fraud across the entire government, as I reported for @atrupar.com this week. www.publicnotice.co/p/despite-th...

EXCLUSIVE: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last week ordered U.S. Cyber Command to stand down from all planning against Russia, including offensive digital actions. On @therecordmedia.bsky.social therecord.media/hegseth-orde...

For my latest edition of @bloomberg.com Buying Power, I wrote about the enormous economic and societal risks that come along with this week’s news that the richest 10% of Americans now do fully half of the country’s consumer spending. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

I don't think The Nazi Salute Guy was making a "big mistake" when he implied everybody with the last name "Eisen" is part of an evil shadowy criminal cabal!

Both my parents worked at Social Security headquarters, making it possible for our family to thrive. It’s awful that tens of thousands of federal workers are being fired by the world’s richest man for no good reason, but this story definitely hits home: www.thebaltimorebanner.com/economy/soci...

Wrote about how easy it is to claim you saved taxpayers billions when you just make shit up. But also how this is the Twitter Files all over again. The dumbest people don't know what they're looking at so it must be a conspiracy www.techdirt.com/2025/02/19/i...

A new government tracker claims DOGE has saved billions from ending federal contracts. But an NPR analysis of the data finds the claimed savings don't add up.

Nunez has lost everything. Shell of a player now

Commentary: DOGE was created under the guise of eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse in federal spending. But, like many of Musk’s grand pitches — DOGE is just another empty promise from one of the world’s most practiced conmen.

DOGE says it has saved $55 billion in federal spending so far, but its website only accounts for $16.6 billion of that

NEW: Despite DOGE, Trump's agenda calls for adding trillions of dollars to U.S debt Budget experts on the “rhetoric versus reality” behind the Trump-Musk efforts >> www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

On the "wall of receipts" it published yesterday, DOGE claimed $8 billion of savings on one contract. It was actually an $8 million contract. from @sangerkatz.bsky.social @aatishb.bsky.social @ethansinger.bsky.social + Josh Katz www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

DOGE says they are saving 4 billion, but... ➡️ Every dollar in NIH research grants generates $2.46 in economic activity ($93 billion in 2023!) ➡️ The $1.7 trillion US biotech industry depends on public-funded science ➡️ Both of those fund a $57 billion US market for scientific tools and equipment

You know what bars are missing? Arts and crafts.

Gessen is indispensable right now. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/15/o...

Most people in the US have no idea about the attacks on federally funded science or our government institutions. Many (or most!) of your family, coworkers, neighbors, and friends have no idea. My own MAGA dad thinks DOGE is just identifying waste, and that nothing has been cut. We have to tell them.

More people need to understand this: Fox, Sinclair, and right-wing and foreign influencers/bots on social media flood the attention MAGA and even non-MAGA low info voters. Many have not heard a single competing reality of these events and consequences

[email protected] is the first big news org I've seen to highlight what's going on with federal datasets - I mean highlight as in put it up top in a newsletter. Researchers have been scrambling to archive datasets because we don't know what's being changed. This is big, and it's bad on a lot of levels.

Many universities and other institutions are going to sell out their members and the communities they serve thinking of the money they stand to lose over a few years even though nothing they do will be enough to keep from losing that money. So they could just… not do that
