I know this is extremely vulgar idealism, but I do think we should try to aggressively reassert the norm that lying is bad. Not in a "Four Pinnochios" fact-checking kind of way, but in a way that frames this kind of lying as moral degeneracy that is fundamentally corrosive to the human spirit.

Most people in the US have no idea about the attacks on federally funded science or our government institutions. Many (or most!) of your family, coworkers, neighbors, and friends have no idea. [email protected] is the first big news org I've seen to highlight what's going on with federal datasets - I mean highlight as in put it up top in a newsletter. Researchers have been scrambling to archive datasets because we don't know what's being changed. This is big, and it's bad on a lot of levels.
