'Small' nature. Several different lichen on a twig :-) #fungifriends #lichen #photography

Stemonitopsis typhina #slimemold

There is so much to love about @quammen.bsky.social's The Song of the Dodo, but I am particularly enjoying how he intersperses a wealth of information on island biogeography, evolution, and extinction with moments of levity. And dad jokes.

Moss decorated with a bright orange slime mold. Northwest Territories, Canada. #moss #bryophyte #slimemould #fungifriends

I love being alive on this planet

I was delaying starting intermezzo because I love Sally Rooney's other works so much I was afraid of being disappointed in this one. Instead, I'm again impressed at how she renders the hidden tenderness of people who love deeply but struggle to say it aloud. Very much want to give Ivan a hug.

Seriously #hotstick spotted while walking up Gilboa mountain in the Karkloof!

Being a good friend is reminding them Jordan Peterson is an alleged Russian propagandist.

I spent some time reflecting on where I am this new year.

When I say this tree was foaming with orchids!

Some beautiful fungi from a walk through my local park yesterday. #fungifriends

Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends: 1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration; 2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you; 3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

Just started Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel. It's the forth book of hers I've read and I'm perpetually in awe of how she manages to create such a frictionless, immersive reading experience. It looks effortless but I'm certain it's not. #booksky

There was a time in my life when I viewed exercise as punishment and I worked really hard to change that relationship so after many months of not being able to move the way I want because of cancer treatment, it's amazing to be in a place in life where movement = joy again!

Just completed my final session of radiation! 🎉🎉🎉

If the events of this week and the reality of the Private Healthcare Industry have shown us anything, it is that we need to think about other ways of doing things.

How much of the ongoing discussion around + desire to fit Luigi Mangione into the "good guy folk hero" box comes from the fact that he is conventionally attractive? Like, if he were a little less hot, would he still dominate our timelines or would this story have already been buried by other news?

Embroidery helps, though

Essentially, I didn't survive cancer to give up on my aspirations. Don't let the bastards grind you down!

Yesterday I learned that my applications for PhD funding were rejected. Spent most of the day crying. Today, I woke up determined to find some other way to make it happen. The whole experience put me in mind of this glorious Bake Off moment. Got rejected, had a breakdown, bon appetite!

Just discovered #HotStickSaturday is a thing… here are a few from lockdown when #lichen #moss & #twigs helped me so much

The vast majority of us when the gas industry tells us we need to burn more fossil fuels to solve climate change

Love a moody seascape while running. There was so much spray it felt like I was breathing in salt!

Got through a whole week of radiation, which so far is a lot less challenging than chemo. Every time I'm strapped down under the machine, I'm amazed that these short minutes exposed to something so otherwise hazardous are going to make it very hard for my DNA to mess up again.

Omg nature nerd/botany nerd alert: Robin Wall Kimmerer released a new book!!! 🌱 www.robinwallkimmerer.com/books

Another poem that makes me go wow, someone else felt that? #poetry #booksky #adalimon

I'm lucky enough to have a great great grandfather who, at the end of his life, decided to record his travels as a sailor. In addition to train-hopping across Canada and the US and stowing away on a ship to Jamaica, he saw sharks and manta rays huge enough to unsettle even seasoned seafarers.

Every year I look forward to nectarine season, and every year I am reminded why their name literally means "nectar like".
