18F, a digital services unit inside the General Services Administration, has been completely laid off, according to an email I’ve seen. The email says that 18F was deemed “non-critical” and the decision was made with the “explicit” direction of the administration and GSA leadership.

Can't make this up: The creators of the video intended it as «satire,» though not necessarily «critical,» because they see Trump's plans for ethnic cleansing as «one of the few forward-thinking policy proposals». Also, they're angry that Trump stole their «content because it was made by artists.»

NEW: A searing editorial in the The Kyiv Independent. “It’s time to say it plainly. America’s leadership has switched sides in the war. The American people have not, and they should speak up. “A president just disrespected America in the Oval Office. It wasn’t Zelensky.” @kyivindependent.com

DOGE recommended firing workers at: -FDA, which oversees Neuralink -FAA, which oversees SpaceX -USAID, which probed Starlink -CFPB, which oversees Tesla's financing arm and a potential payment platform on X. "Conflict of interest" is a severe understatement.

Sam Altman says GPT-4.5 has "a magic to it i haven't felt before." I'm reminded of Peter Nagy and Gina Neff's article about "the conjuration of algorithms—a strategically deployed narrative device that uses the principles of magic to manipulate the public perception of technologies."

I am so pleased to announce a Palestinian Studies cluster hire at @huntercollege.bsky.social - we are hiring one person in the arts and another in the social sciences. This is an incredible source of pride for me as a faculty member & one of the many reasons that I feel so lucky to work here 1/

FOI'ed Home Affairs around the decision making to ban DeepSeek. They didn't want to hand over all the 4,000 emails that week, but did get this briefing document, stating the reason was the retention of data used to train the AI. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

These stories amount to "the left was so annoying about pronouns or liberals made people feel so guilty about plastic straws they had no choice but to get on board with the second coming of the Third Reich and the destruction of the planet."

A third of the remaining staff from what was the US Digital Service have resigned rather than help Musk dismantle government services. apnews.com/article/doge...

This video is profoundly disturbing. But it should remind us that the focus on the danger of “deepfakes” was misplaced. Trump rose to political prominence (~2015/2016) alongside a visual meme culture. Generative AI allows him to take that kind of visual propaganda to a whole other level.

You know those painted “parade of cows” things? Did you know David Lynch did a cow for one of them once? For NYC I think. Anyway, they refused to display it.

one of many bizarre diagrams in 1st order cybernetics showing abstract body parts (sans body) interacting with some equally abstract environmental system. if these theories of adaptive learning form foundational layers of ML and AI then...something something significant? #cybernetics

Ok, I got really excited when I saw this report from GNET but it literally doesn't talk about anime??? It isolates anime from its consumers??? And the final recommendations is to use AI and watermarking to block anime posts "flagged as dangerous in nature" ?????? gnet-research.org/2024/12/19/a...

Think I’ll pass on the piece in which a racist creep explains why a major party embracing the Nazi salute really isn’t a big deal.

Turned down reviewing for the NEH today.

I think everyone should apply for a DOGE job. Or at least, you know, fill out the form. Maybe even apply for other people. Fictional people, even. Inanimate objects. In this form right here. doge.gov/join

Free speech no longer exists in the US government. For @theatlantic.com I spoke with 12+ federal workers in 6 agencies who said the Trump administration’s actions have led to pervasive self-censorship, even on issues some view as critical to national security. 1/ www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

«‹What’s the point of fighting cybercrime if we’re just going to give access for government networks to people with cybercriminal gang affiliations?› says a cybersecurity researcher who tracks cybercriminal groups.»

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

The LGBTQ+ History Association statement on our outrage and call to update National Park Service (NPS) websites after the removal of reference to the Transgender (T) and Queer (Q) communities and history. Please read our full statement: tinyurl.com/LGBTQHistory...

At the request of the Trump Admin, the Ntl Park Service removed references to trans people in this essay w/o consulting the writer, historian @wendylrouse.bsky.social. Read it here as Prof Rouse intended (and as the NPS published/maintained it until now). 🗃️ drive.google.com/file/d/1p-rQ...

DOGE engineer credits Ron Unz for his radicalization. Unz's website (pink node on the left side of the graph below) featured into an analysis my team did years ago (2017) of the "alternative media echo-system" that produced conspiracy theories and Russian disinformation about the Syrian civil war.

At the Paris AI Action Summit, Dr. Alondra Nelson was an invited speaker at a private dinner at the Elysée Palace hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Here are her remarks on “three fundamental misconceptions in the way we think about artificial intelligence.”

As DOGE began infiltrating government agencies and targeting federal staff for termination, I started interviewing tech workers on the front lines. With the mass layoffs unfolding today, and with their permission, I'm sharing their stories. This is what it's been like to endure Musk's campaign.

Dear federal scientists: If you have been affected by the probationary firings and would be willing to speak with Science, please reach out to me by email ([email protected]) or on Signal. We can guarantee annonymity.
