Most good museums have a shop and ours is no exception! As well as souvenirs, many local history books/booklets (most written by our researchers) are available from our online shop. If you're interested in the local history of #Nantwich and #Cheshire have a browse nantwichmuseum.org.uk/our-shop/

At Nantwich Museum we're committeed to holding community events and on the last Friday of every month we have free drop-in coffee mornings. Our volunteers make delicious cakes - here are some of the irresistible offerings from last month! Our next coffee morning is Fri 28th Feb, 10.30-12.00

Ever bought a designer leather bag with a logo stamped into it? Or maybe you've admired embossed patterns on belts or wallets? Over 1200 years ago, the Anglo-Saxons did the same thing—with a bit more beastly flair!

So pleased to have our work reported in @chemistryworld.com...

Every year we host an exhibition by Nantwich Camera Club, displaying new work by the Club's members (the exhibition runs until Sat 3 May). Admission is free so if you're in the area please drop in Tue-Sat 10am-4pm. The lovely picture featured here is entitled "Tryfan at sunset" #Wales #Snowdonia

We're proud to host art exhibitions by artists from far and wide. The latest is by Marko Alabaster who has exhibited across Europe, but likes our little town, saying: “Nantwich is to me a national treasure...it has a long lasting place in my heart and soul.” The exhibition runs until 22 March.

Our Friendship Group, open to people with dementia & their carers, has received a £750 donation from the Nantwich Inner Wheel (local branch of the international women's organisation). The donation will enable us to arrange a summer outing for the group and a range of activities in the coming months😇

Another large piece of research finally goes to print and something I have been working on for several months - the story of 6 Bomb Disposal men that died near #Nantwich during #WW2 #Genealogy #Cheshire #RoyalEngineers #WorldWar2 chiddicksfamilytree.com/2024/04/17/d...

We're committed to working with our community & have a new initiative to bring history to life! We’ve filled large boxes with interesting objects with roots in local Roman, Victorian and WW2 history and are loaning them to local schools and community groups - see poster below for contact info

Our Civil War battlefield model depicts the Battle of Nantwich (25 Jan 1644): landscape, buildings, positioning of troops & fortifications (the ground is white as there was deep snow that day). The model is large so it only comes out of storage once a year to coincide with the battle re-enactment!

Just two days until Holly Holy Day and the Battle of Nantwich re-enactment! Lots of free events going on at the Museum for all the family. The Museum is open from 10am-4pm (Sat 25 Jan)

It's Quiz night at @fhsofcheshire.bsky.social #Crewe & #Nantwich Group - an annual quiz, nothing to hard but a lot of fun via Zoom Details if you wish to attend, still not too late - www.fhsc.org.uk/events/crewe...

Snowdrops spotted today - the first signs of spring in the Museum's little courtyard garden. We're looking forward to planning the planting schedule for when the weather improves.

Just ten days to go until The Battle of Nantwich – come and see us help defend the town from the Royalist siege! We'll be marching down streets packed with local people for this fantastic annual parade and battle. Details here: buff.ly/40xcxjO

We’re delighted to be displaying “The Royal Rumble” exhibition, showcasing the English Civil War collections of the Grosvenor Museum, Chester. The exhibition was designed by undergraduate Archaeology students at Chester University for their final year module, “Archaeology and Contemporary Society”

Visiting a museum this week? If so, join in the fun on #MuseumSelfieDay!

Nantwich used to be famous for its salt, which was produced in the town by evaopration of local brine from springs. Salt is still manufactured elsewhere in Cheshire - now mined rather than produced from brine.

January's a busy time for us in the run up to the Battle of Nantwich re-enactment (25 Jan). We have talks & guided walks from 8 Jan, see nantwichmuseum.org.uk/events-2/, a battlefield model & family-friendly events on 25 Jan, including handling replica Civil War objects & participating in war games!

Although most of our followers aren't local to Nantwich, we thought our upcoming programme of talks might be of interest to anyone from the area. The English Civil War had a big impact on Nantwich, which experienced a significant battle on 25 Jan 1644 (re-enacted annually).

The River Weaver flows through Nantwich and meanders through Cheshire roughly northwards until it flows into the Manchester Ship Canal (before the Ship Canal was constructed it flowed into the River Mersey). Love this picture from our friends at the Catalyst Museum.

We're quite a small musuem without much outside space, but we decided last year to make the most of what we've got and create a little courtyard garden, which brightens up the step-free access route into the museum. Recent pictures taken in the snow - plenty of colour for the season too.

This looks like fun...

At this time of year we start to get excited about the annual re-enactment (by the Sealed Knot) of the Civil War Battle of Nantwich which took place on 25 Jan 1644. Our artist has done a number of paintings depicting the town during that period, this one shows construction of the defensive mud walls

Nantwich was known for production of high-quality salt, made using brine from local springs, evaporated over wood fires. At its peak there were over 200 ‘wich’ (salt-making) houses in the town. Pictured is the Museum's section of an ancient 'salt ship', used for storing salt.

Recently we won an award from South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, voted for by the public. The award recognised the Museum's positive impact on the local community & role in acting as an ambassador for the area to other regions. The competition was tough and we're very proud!

We have many volunteer teams at the Museum...our Education Team runs school visits, featuring topics aligned with the National Curriculum & (weather permitting) leads walks around town to explore Nantwich's historic buildings. The Team organises popular free drop-in school holiday workshops too.

One of the most popular displays at Nantwich Museum is the Cheese Room. It’s believed that by 1600 local people were making cheese, with production in Cheshire peaking around the start of the 20th century. The exhibit includes a cheese vat, a cheese press & other cheesemaking equipment.

We're delighted to have been awarded South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce's Ambassador of the Year award. Only possible thanks to our dedicated volunteers - involved with Collections, Research, Education, Front of House, Shared Reading & more. Thanks to them all, and to everyone who voted for us.

We're delighted to join the growing number of museums on Bluesky! We're a small but innovative museum with only a few staff but many volunteers, dedicated to bringing the town's history to life for visitors from near and far.
