"The president of the United States picked Russia’s side in the war it started against its democratic neighbor — whose only fault was that it wanted to stay a democracy. Trump is choosing to side with a murderous tyrant over a democratically elected leader." --Kyiv Independent

IYKYK

I've been getting a bunch of messages from parents lately who are reading THE OGRESS AND THE ORPHANS with their children right now as a way of navigating these strange political times. And yes, the themes are more relevant than I might wish - misinformation, despotism, scapegoating, corruption.

I stand with Ukraine. I have friends there and friends from there. But even if I didn't, I stand with Ukraine. I am horrified that the US sided with Russia to vote against a UN resolution condemning Moscow for the Ukraine War. The people of Ukraine must be defended by all who stand for freedom.

Amazing!

For some Friday fun: My kindergartener has written and illustrated two books at the kitchen table this week. Both about an alligator and friends. Here's one of the pages:

If you need to cleanse your feed, here's what's going right: ☀️ A greenhouse w/ solar power-generating windows grew crops using 57% less energy & could soon be self-sufficient (PV Magazine) 🚫 France voted to end production, import & sale of non-essential products containing PFAs (France24)

NEW: The Trump admin is considering destroying 160 million COVID tests, worth half a billion dollars. This would be a horrible waste. COVID is still around, and causes high levels of illness and deaths throughout the year. Tests are expensive. The government should send them to people for free.

It may feel weird or somehow improper to talk about your art or your writing, but we need it. It can’t be wall-to-wall nightmare all the time. Art is both counterweight and context. It’s escape and enlightenment and a mirror of our own exasperation. We need it. We NEED it. Keep showing us.

I have a kid who benefits from a 504 plan in school and I know many other families who have kids with 504 plans or IEPs. It's really important for them to have these rights protected so they can be educated and part of the school community like everyone else. Disability rights must be protected.

I really really need you guys to make a conscious rejection of generative AI tools part of your ongoing political resistance. Don't use ChatGPT. Turn off Gemini. Don't read the AI results forced upon you at the top of Google search. Don't use AI art generators or support anyone who does. Please.

The part of George Orwell’s 1984 that everyone forgets is how the music and publishing industries have been replaced by a machine that spits out songs and bad novels “without any human intervention.” The goal is to keep you from ever having to think.

Love this from #MacBarnett

the perfect place exists. its name is the rabbit hole and it is in kansas city, missouri

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." --Galatians 6:9 I'm not usually one to post Bible verses, but this one was ringing in my ears today.

What a great picture book about an inspiring person: Opening the Road: Victor Hugo Green & His Green Book by @keilavdawson.bsky.social illus. by @alleannaharris.bsky.social . Great summary of the story below:

Tonight's self-care: watching Emma (2020 version) under a cozy crocheted blanket next to my dog. How about you? How are you resting or recharging or coping (or not)?

This is such a beautiful book! If you loved Mother God by Teresa Kim Pecinovsky and Khoa Le, you'll love this new picture book by Paul Harbridge and Marta Dorado. Coming out in April but you can preorder now. 25% off from B&N if you preorder in the next couple of days!

Hey #kidlit, with everything going on in the world I think we could all use a collective reminder. *Why* do you choose to make books for children?

Do yourself and democracy a favor. Support independent media.

When Congressman John Lewis was a child, he tried to get a library card. He was turned away & told “The Library is not for coloureds” 💔 He’s a civil rights icon, lover of books, recipient of the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. “The Library IS for Everyone” 💚 #BlackHistoryMonth

Update from the copyright office about AI use designtaxi.com/news/427308/...

i just cannot get over how much the administration’s response to the crash shows a profound disrespect for the lives of the people they are supposed to serve

I went to South Africa for a month during my college years. While there, I visited an orphanage for kids who were HIV positive or whose parents died of AIDS. I'm thinking of kids like them and their caregivers as our President has withdrawn all foreign aid for HIV prevention. Devastating.

Awards day can be exciting, but it can also be incredibly frustrating. Remember there's room for all kinds of books. Kiddos don't need shinies on their favorite books to love them to the moon and back. Huge congrats to the winners. And huge congrats to those that mean something to any kid out there.

I saw a blog about finding comp titles using chat gpt and it seemed like poor advice, and after my indignant skeptic instinct was provoked enough, I took a minute doing what the blog suggested. What I got in return were books *that do not actually exist and were completely made up.*

Chrome is starting to force AI writing help on me while writing a Substack post and I am NOT okay with this. I'll figure out how to turn this off, but it's getting harder and harder to run away from the forced adoption of AI.

The worst part about being an adult is realizing that usually the bad guys win.

"A whopping 82% of people who used the library’s physical space and 79% of people who physically attended programs reported more optimism regarding the future, compared to only 58% of digital-only users." Our physical space and resources matter *greatly!* bookriot.com/innovative-s...

Thinking about Biblical prophets and how they spoke difficult truths to kings and people in power, were not welcome in their hometowns, and how they frequently exposed people's idolatry and urged them to follow the true God instead. Such prophets still exist today.
