If there is a choice between .com and any other gTLD, I'm leaning towards .com. It has more credibility, no doubt there.
However, sometimes there just isn't any choice. Either purchasing a .com means 10K or it's not available at all... in that case, .me could be an option! Defo better than .biz 😂

You are correct, people do you use it for personal purposes. It was originally a ccTLD, now turned gTLD and officially recognised as such by Google. So no worries with your website, ha :D
