We’ve seen splits between strongmen and their oligarch backers before: Putin and Khodorkovsky, Orban and Simicska. In those cases, control of state power beat enormous wealth. I loathe Elon, but how this plays out will tell us something about how far down the road to autocracy we’ve gone.

The Washington Examiner (the conservative news outlet) reports that Stephen Miller screamed at ICE officials: "What do you mean you're going after criminals? Why aren't you at Home Depot? Why aren't you at 7-Eleven?" Kinda blows up the narrative that they care about public safety.

If this is even remotely accurate, Elon Musk and Donald Trump have killed more people in several months than the Iraq war killed in a decade

Just read this sentence. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/17/o...

Thanks @repgaramendi.bsky.social for calling this out. Not in our district.

Every member of Congress must make a choice. Do you stand with a lawless authoritarian who is crashing our economy and giving away the store to billionaires at the expense of American families, or do you stand with the people he’s hurting every day? I know whose side I’m on.

This is the way. Congressional Democrats may be in the minority, but they still have the power to call attention to the Administration’s abuses— and to remind people that one day the rule of law will be restored.

Reagan appointee judge Wilkinson: “The government is asserting a right to stash away residents of this country in foreign prisons without the semblance of due process that is the foundation of our constitutional order… It is all too possible to see in this case an incipient crisis.”

Controlling the AIDS epidemic in Africa was the greatest achievement of American foreign aid. Now we’ve cut off the medications and children are dying. Children.

This is it, folks. Far larger than Harvard itself, as large as Harvard is. Every nonprofit from the center leftward is on notice for potential destruction.

First, they said they’ll send undocumented immigrants with no due process to a foreign prison camp. Next, they said any immigrant — documented or not. Now, they say it’s citizens. And that once they send you even on accident, they can’t bring you back.

Under this theory, there is also nothing that prevents them from shipping *American citizens* to a gulag in El Salvador and saying "nothing we can do."

1.2 MILLION children dead

Con law prof here. This shit is WILD. "Plenary authority, derived from Article II and the mandate of the electorate" to disappear whoever the state deems a terrorist is not a fucking thing in any kind of constitutional democracy. It's unvarnished tyranny.

It’s obvious that this next few years is going to be a huge test of personal and institutional integrity. A lot of important people and elite institutions are failing. Keep in mind that people will remember how you acted when things are really bad.

Profoundly sad, entirely unnecessary, and thoroughly shameful.

Can’t emphasize this enough: if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the debased assault on our country, the antidote is connecting with other people in the flesh who are feeling the same way. There are millions of us.

No. No no no.

you’re fired. wait you’re rehired. email us a list of things you’ve done today wait forget it you’re fired again. come back your job was important. you’re fired. or hired. come in to the office. wait the office has no computers go home. we are the department of government efficiency.

When we say the cuts to USAID are immoral, this is what we mean.

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

Total USAID annual spending to provide food, medicine, shelter and other services to impoverished countries around the world: $38 billion Total increase in Elon Musk's personal net worth since the November election: $156 billion

If Congress and the judiciary permit the abolition of USAID to stand, nothing will prevent Trump or Elon Musk from doing the same thing to the CDC, EPA, FBI, or any other federal agency or department.

As I’ve been saying, always read @jamellebouie.net From today’s “If All This Sounds Delusional, That’s Because It Is,” www.nytimes.com/2025/01/29/o...

The Dems’ use of “President Elon” to message on the coming tax fight is the first sign since the election that they can both present a clear opposition and navigate the attention economy. Love to see it.
