Sign of the day…

None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

I'm manifesting that a world leader tells one of them to shut up right to their face. And put it all on camera.

This country FALLING OFF THE BONE COOKED!

What a fucking disgusting display of greed and arrogance toward President Zelenskyy. They don’t give a damn about his country, his people (nor ours either, clearly).

My mentor and dear friend @roxanegay.bsky.social recently joined me here at Harvard Medical School for an incredible event. We both read new work and then had a wide-ranging discussion about the creative life, politics and culture. I’m delighted to be able to share the video now:

We are hiring! Orca is looking for a nonfiction editor with book-editing experience and an understanding of publishing for young readers. Sound like you or someone you know? Check out the posting! www.orcabook.com/Careers

Why do this? Because the more people who participate, the more effective it will be. Because giving people a taste of our collective power helps us build toward bigger actions in the future. Because activism is a muscle and organizing is a skill and this is a fine place to begin.

Very excited to share that this beautiful little volume of poems by the late, visionary Essex Hemphill, which I co-edited with the brilliant Robert Reid-Pharr & for which he wrote the introduction & I the afterword, will be out next week (March 5) from New Directions! www.ndbooks.com/book/love-is...

This vote was to start the process of the cuts. It WILL come back for a final vote. There are some chances to slow or potentially stop it. Need constant pressure on GOP Focus on GOP swing seats & key committees. Energy & Commerce is where the Medicaid fight will go down. Ways&Means for tax fight.

Colorado's Rep Brittany Pettersen (D) flew cross-country with her one-month-old to vote against the GOP budget tonight. Dems ended up one vote short. Pettersen was part of an unsuccessful bipartisan push to allow new mothers to vote remotely. #copolitics

Looking at a Joan Mitchell at the Whitney it crystallized for me that a function of art is to restore psychic balance as in the ability to hold the soul upright / not tip forward or slouch compress - but also that there is no one way, only correcting checking going by feel

Malcolm X was assassinated 60 yrs ago today. See his timeless wisdom on the true meaning of “progress.” “If you stick a knife 9 inches in & take it out 6—that’s not progress. Progress is healing the wound. They wont even admit the knife is there.”

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

You can try to legislate us out of existence, but we are still here. You can strip away our rights, but you will never take our dignity. You can spread your hatred, but you will never break our resolve. BUT HEAR THIS LOUD AND CLEAR MOTHERFUCKERS: WE WILL NOT GO QUIETLY!!!

In addition to Congress being the place that makes the laws, pretty key thing, the constitution explicitly says Congress gets to create the postal system. It’s not left implied that that comes under law making generally. The President has no power to unilaterally abolish it and move it to commerce.

From a poem of mine, “We Could Break Forever,” first published by @antiheroinchic.bsky.social: “We have to fly down from the moon now. Flock / back to this gutted country. Show up with our throats shining.” heroinchic.weebly.com/blog/poetry-...

Sixty years ago, five assassins from the Nation of Islam murdered Malcolm X. The FBI had spent years escalating the serious political differences between Malcolm and NOI leaders—and worsening petty jealousies NOI leaders had for Malcolm as his prominence rose.

NEW: Pregnancy became far more dangerous in Texas after the state banned abortion, according to ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis, which found the sepsis rate for women hospitalized as they miscarried in the 2nd trimester shot up by more than 50%. https://propub.li/43487Tj

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️
