When I landed in SLC, I used the bathroom despite an anti-trans bathroom ban. Nobody cared. Nobody ever does. The truth is, whatever anti-trans laws they keep passing, nobody actually gives a damn or wants to be the bathroom police. This is the ultimate reason anti-trans hysteria will fail.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

Some self-proclaimed leftists (campists more than anything) are now caught in the difficult position of being on the side of Russia *and* the US. Let’s see how they reconcile this one. And good luck to Ukraine, now in the far more difficult position of defending itself against two imperialist powers

I think most people are intuitively aware of this but something like the official White House account posting an “ASMR” video of shackled immigrants is not just cruel for its own sake, it’s intentional envelope-pushing to ramp up to desensitization over inhumane detention, camps, and deaths

It's a good time to rediscover System of a Down (even though one of the band members has gone MAGA, which is...WILD, considering SoaD's music)

Trump's lawyers are absolutely flailing in the courts right now

Bar-prepping as the parent of an almost one-year-old is not for the faint of heart, especially one that's violently teething.

Never mind woke Marxism, I can't even indoctrinate my students into formatting a bibliography consistently. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Non-definitions of gender are more pressing than ever. Disappear the ground they have to stand on. Every right(s)-minded person/institution around the world should be keeping this in mind as they, say, draft new treaties/policies/consider amendments.

The National Park Service eliminated references to transgender people from its Stonewall National Monument web page, removing the “T” in references to LGBTQ+ on the official site for the Greenwich Village monument, which marks a milestone in the fight for gay rights.

Unrelated, we saved the vaccine schedules for our son. Just in case it became useful as a reference.

It shouldn't surprise anyone to know that the author of That Article's whole bread and butter is writing about "Radical Islam" in South and Southeast Asia. There's always a type.

I'd love more context—why did we end up relocating, again? /s

Snoop and Tom Brady: say no to hate Kendrick: actually

Alexander Pope wrote poems that were so mean grown men quit writing, and Kendrick is firmly in his tradition

For decades, the right has been obsessed with apartheid South Africa as a way to mourn the end of formal segregation in the US. With neo-segregationists now in power, it’s no wonder they’re opening the doors to white South Africans, using racist conspiracy theories to justify their actions.

Many have correctly noted that forced transfer/deportation is a war crime & crime against humanity. On “voluntariness,” it bears emphasizing that the forced nature of transfer can be established where the perpetrators take advantage of a coercive environment that precludes genuine choice.

The Guardian deserves an award for this paragraph. An Ignominy. Just absolutely outrageous mealy mouthed unwillingness to call a spade a spade.

Signs. Of. Life. Protest outside Treasury Dept. tonight.

Discworld QOTD, from Guards! Guards!

Ugh, link here: 19thnews.org/2025/01/tran... This is very red flag. And hasn't been big news.

In my years of reporting on LGBTQ news this was by far the hardest. But we are still here. You made it to Friday. You lived. Good job. That wasn’t easy. Through a diversity of tactics, we will continue to live. Rest up, drink water, find community, so that we can all be here tomorrow too.

I applied for naturalization yesterday as an insurance policy to keep my family together, and I’m not sure that it’s a good insurance policy anymore.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have killed more than 800 babies under a year old, and over 17,800 children in Gaza overall, officials said.

For absolutely no reason whatsoever, here's a comment I wrote about the #RomeStatute 's binary definition of #gender and the harms thereof in a world that's seeing increasing hostility against trans and GNC folks. Applicable beyond the Rome Statute, of course. repository.law.wisc.edu/s/uwlaw/medi...

Thinking about all the pictures and videos of people celebrating and wondering how many of them…

Nightmare continues

Journalist Anas Al-Sharif removes his helmet and announces a ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel. His voice steady as his fellow Palestinians lift him into the air in celebration. For 15 months, the Al-Jazeera correspondent has reported on the genocide of his people in Gaza.

Freedom next. Ameen.

Watching reels of Palestinian babies' eyes lighting up as they touch a tomato or bite into a shawarma; guys bringing the aid sacks & cooking with whatever they've got. May they consume strength after this starvation. 🇵🇸

Since then, the IDF killed at least 10,361 Palestinians and wounded at least 27,955 Palestinians. Hamas killed several hostages, and the IDF may have killed others inadvertently (reports vary). Biden was too weak to stop it. And that is the generous interpretation.

i'm terrified and hopeful and so terrified and so hopeful

I am following the cue of Gazans celebrating on the streets and trying to feel some joy. I’m facing how numb I’ve become in order to survive. I longed for this moment for 467 days, and it’s here. And I don’t know how to access my feelings about it.

Breaking news: Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire deal, in a major breakthrough including the release of Israeli hostages, a senior U.S. official said Wednesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive negotiations.

Don't look away.

The Israeli ban on UNRWA is set to begin in about three weeks. There is no other entity that can fill the void of their humanitarian capacity. Israel, as the Occupying Power, is responsible for Palestinian health, yet it is highly unlikely they will start fulfilling this duty. What then?
