Staff at Newcastle University are facing redundancy as the cuts to higher education continue to deepen. This is harming the future of our young people and undermines the progress we could be making as a country. Please support the @ucu.org.uk as they stand against this. Solidarity.

It’s hard to see this as anything other than the attempt of an American President to pressure Ukraine to change their democratically elected President. This is not the path to peace. This is dangerous. My thoughts are once again with the Ukrainian people.

I was told last year that Nottingham and Newcastle were the last remaining English cities to have not yet had @greenparty.org.uk representatives. Newcastle elected our first two Greens in May, and now it’s good to see Cllr Quddoos making the move in Nottingham. Welcome!

If Putin hadn’t invaded, Ukraine would not have seen the horrific death and destruction they have experienced. If Trump & Vance hadn’t humiliated Zelensky, we wouldn’t now be in such a precarious moment in international relations. Bullies have no place in modern politics.

It’s as if he thinks the real reform is Britain becoming America’s 51st state. Farage might have been able to read the public mood once, but his thinking is increasingly out of step with the public mood.

Big welcome to Newcastle City Council to our Parks and Allotments teams. Our green spaces are precious for health, wellbeing, nature and as a vital part of local solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss. Thank you to Urban Green. Much work to do. www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-e...

It’s the grins and the “jokes” that disturb me the most.

My favourite part of being a @greenparty.org.uk councillor is being free to stand up for residents, and working with people across our communities here in Byker to build a fairer society. We can do it together!

I just popped by Hadrian Square in Byker. Lots of children playing and having fun in a part of the ward where previously I know many of us haven’t felt safe. More info here: new.newcastle.gov.uk/news/2025/sn...

After @ofgem.bsky.social’s news about the rising energy price cap, and the government’s failure to act, the situation with Byker Estate’s District Heating Network remains urgent. Heat Networks are exempt from the price cap, leaving many homeowners paying more than average energy users 🧵

I can say confidently that Jim Mackey has been well received by staff at Newcastle Hospitals. Jim’s visibility, responsiveness and focus on culture change has made a real difference that I trust will continue to positively impact patient care. Good luck at @NHSEngland, much to do!

Newcastle Hospitals’ Chief Exec Sir Jim Mackey steps up as interim CEO of NHS England. I’ve been impressed by Jim’s approach at Newcastle Hospital. His openness and can do attitude will no doubt come in helpful as he tries to steer the NHS forward. Good luck! www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Yesterday on X, the Green Party’s post in solidarity with Ukraine after 3 years of resistance to Putin drew criticism from some supposedly on the left as well as (predictably) from the far right. Common themes in this were that Ukraine is fighting a “proxy war” for the US & NATO...🧵

Thank you to all the Byker residents who joined our Green Party Clean Streets Campaign today. Of course we need to keep making the case for change. Meanwhile we’re plugging the gaps, cleaning the streets and connecting our neighbours to get stuff done. Join us!

Thank you to Lloyd Jones from North East Community Forest, Darren Varley (Newcastle Council lead on Blue Green), Net Zero lead David Trousdale, Nature Network’s Ben Walton & council ecologist Natalie Rutter for an illuminating Q&A at last night’s council organised Climate Change Forum.

As Green Councillor @natehiggins.bsky.social says here, by changing the electoral system, we improve the way politicians listen to people and we include more people in decision making. “There is no monopoly on wisdom”. It’s really important we #MakeVotesMatter

An update from @chroniclelive.co.uk on Newcastle City Council's actions on climate change. The council was right to declare a Climate Emergency following much campaigning by Green Party members and many others, but are we now treading water? www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-e...

Come along to the Spires Lane Hobby Room in Byker, Thursday morning. I’ll be joining local academic Eda Seyok as she invites Byker residents to share thoughts on what community means. If you live, work or shop around Shields Road or St Lawrence’s, please come along from 10am👇

Are you aged 18-25 and living/working/studying in Newcastle? This could be for you. commonpurpose.org/legacy/newca...

This message might come from Bristol, but it’s true right around the country. Especially here in the North East. We need to see the cuts to local authorities reversed. For people, for planet. For our communities. Well said @robbryher.bsky.social

#ChildrensMentalHealthWeek 👇

I learned last year that some mental health services are running with a 50% vacancy rate, posts were being advertised to fill the gap but people just weren't applying for the posts. We desperately need healthcare to be made a far more desirable field to work in if we're ever going to fix this

The waiting times for children’s mental health services are unacceptable. This example from a constituent of Calum Miller MP shows how much more must be done to improve communication and care at the point of need. We have to stand together across parties to change this.

I’m interested to hear from any drivers or businesses who have had difficulties accessing these grants. It would be good to get an understanding of the barriers people might have faced here. Please DM me. #CleanAir #Newcastle

Great work everyone!

Good to see @northumbrianwater.bsky.social invest £1.7 billion to reduce storm overflow spills to clear up our Ouseburn. I spoke to the BBC to welcome this, and I have contacted Northumbrian Water to press for more info on their work here in Byker ward. Campaigns work! www.bbc.com/news/article...
