Fascinating and important (and depressing!) from @semaforben.bsky.social

Good job team America www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

It’s unreal - the DOD deleted its page for Charles Calvin Rodgers, a Medal of Honor recipient who was wounded three times while defending against three assaults on his base in Vietnam. Now the URL includes “DEI Medal of Honor.” There’s something about Rodgers I don’t even have to tell you

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

The New York Times is the first to put out comprehensive estimates on the cost of a year without U.S.A.I.D. and they’re higher than I thought: - 1.65 million deaths from AIDS - 500,000 from lack of vaccines - 550,000 from lack of food aid - 290,000 from malaria - 310,000 from TB

I'm delighted to say that the issue of the @thebulletin.org magazine that my colleague Dan Drollette and I have been working on for months, all about tipping points, is out today. My introduction to the issue is here: thebulletin.org/premium/2025...

So apparently the AP Human Geography site is culling some of its "daily videos" for class use. A teacher tells me the videos on redlining and white flight are gone. In the screenshot below, you can see the Daily Videos start with no. 2 (no. 1 on this page was redlining, and it's gone now).

Potentially interesting job for the NOAA crowd - Verisk, one of the biggest modeling firms in the insurance industry, is looking for an experienced atmospheric scientist. Charles Jackson is hiring, who was on my PhD committee and is just a delight to work with, aside from being a kickass scientist.

if folks could help continue to signal boost this, we’re exceptionally close to our goals but need more finances to clear the finish line and announce something historic

THE STOVE HAS BEEN TOUCHED 🚨 THE STOVE HAS BEEN TOUCHED

We’re gonna rebuild everything.

Probationary employees across @NOAA and the @NWS are being terminated today, including those in mission-essential roles. My own wife is among them, essential to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center's 24/7 critical mission of seismic monitoring and tsunami prediction to protect the public.

RFK Jr. Vows To Make Measles Deaths So Common They Won’t Be Upsetting Anymore

New: Layoffs underway of probationary employees at @noaa.gov Unclear so far how many were exempted for public safety reasons at the Nat'l Weather Service, NOAA Satellites and other units. www.axios.com/2025/02/27/l...

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns. 100% of his salary is paid by WA state. Elon fired him. Share his story.

"The agency didn’t have to fire its experts but decided to in the interest of fairness, a top NSF official told staffers in an emotionally charged hybrid meeting Tuesday morning at its Alexandria, Virginia, headquarters."

Over the past week, several recent ex-State Dept officials reached out to me with a major concern. DOGE could soon access a huge defense-export database that represents a massive, if not transformational corruption opportunity for Musk & allies. Meet USXports:

This story took me two weeks to report, I hope you share it. Environmental justice should not be a footnote in this historical moment.

The incoming Trump administration plans to target the National Climate Assessment so that it can't be used to defend regulations in court. Russ Vought, Trump's OMB pick, wants to personally approve a team of climate denialists to rewrite it. www.eenews.net/articles/tru...

So far this December in Richmond, we've had 7 days at least 10 degrees colder than normal. We only had 7 such days *total* between January and November. Compared to the total days in 2024 at least 10° *warmer* than normal? Reads like a football blowout with a garbage touchdown at the end.

To me the progress reports by the Australian Government doesn't support the success story on emissions reduction that the article suggests. www.dcceew.gov.au/sites/defaul... A short thread on emissions reduction in Australia

Let's hope India, Brazil, China, etc. lead the way, as @chrisisalwright.bsky.social says! I am optimistic about India, as I wrote recently on LinkedIn for @cstep-india.bsky.social

For context: I work at a 501c3 nonprofit. We sued the Trump admin to block his rollbacks of environmental rules on average once per week from 2017-2020. We won 90% of those cases. This is why they want to stop us

Vulnerable people are going to breathe in more pollution from fossil fuels, some will get asthma more, some will have heart attacks more, some will get sick more, and some will die more.
