American Climate Corps, fully funded as public sector workers, building out net-zero infrastructure, restoring natural lands and waters, and building climate-safe and affordable communities from Juneau to Jacksonville.
One of my hairbrained ideas is to have conscription in the US. You'd get a choice between military, peace corps, or something like what you're describing. Public service has a way of breeding a more responsible citizenry.
A good (late) friend of mine was Cuban. When she was in high school she was part of a youth corps that traveled throughout the country to teach literacy—and it’s one of the reasons Cuba has a high literacy rate. Cuba’s communist ideologies were not ideal, but I think this one was a great idea.
Literacy is a problem in the U.S. When people can’t—and don’t—read, they are not fully functioning members of civil society. They are less able to think critically and are more susceptible to propaganda—and that affects us all.
As long as you're dreaming that all 90 million of the Americans who didn't bother voting last fall will change their tune for upcoming elections, I'll add to this Climate Corps dream by making part of a new universal two-year public service post-high school graduation draft.
Hey maybe some of those 90 million will get out and vote for something inspiring like this! It’s why Obama won (even though he was more inspiring oration than policy)
Dream bigger.
USAID+ Habitat+ with a broader frame that includes restoration of lands, waters, climate resilience, housing, jobs, and ways to create communities we don't yet have.
In an Lyft on the way home, stopped in traffic. New apartments, then a small open field. With cows. I like the cows.
Seriously, most people’s problems with the govt is inefficiency that stems from under budgeted and understaffed departments. SSA taking months to approve disability for folks who go bankrupt in the meantime is a huge problem already- and NOW it will be worse. We want stuff to work, which takes staff
Absolutely juice the benefits. A Post 9/11 GI bill for the feds. Working at the post office should get your kids free college. Every IRS agent should be getting a Masters degree for kicks.
Didn't think Trump and Musk would be the team to finally bring down late stage capitalism. Exposing the underbelly for all to see-- they're the absolute perfection of conservatism laid bare. Aghast the devil stood and saw how awful goodness be.
even "congressionally-appropriated roles are overseen by congress, not the executive" doesn't work if the executive has the power -- not the authority, just the capability -- to stop your pay whenever they feel like it
Better and different is process over product
Better and different is diverse rather than monotonous
Better and different is equality and not just equity
Better and different is inclusive and not exclusive and divisive
Better and different is stakeholders having ownership and belonging.
We will need to since it's all compromised. Hardware, software, and processes. From the rooter to the tooter.
Start making those architectural diagrams and researching updated and resilient technology. Learn. Get training. Be ready for the inevitable rebuilding.
I want all the post offices in mid sized towns to have an office added that various roving federal workers can rotate through. One week a SocSec person, one week a medicare/medicaid person, one week an IRS person.
Make it so that help with these services become more available outside cities.

Well, they were…

Rebuilding ain’t worth much if it can just all get wrecked again shortly thereafter

might be wise to make public service ads a thing too so people know how it works
