“Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic,” they said. “That means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice and a third, a fourth. Then what happens?”

Find Justin Webb on Today on Radio 4 completely unlistenable when it comes to the US: glib, ill-informed and opinionated is the worst possible combination in this moment

I actually can't even imagine the horrors that will follow. The fascists in charge of the US are going to set off not just one pandemic, but several.

working on something fun, interactive AND informative! 🤓 #scicomm #science #tuberculosis #microscopy #imageanalysis

This is an image of a human immune cell called a macrophage (purple) connecting with the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis (green), which causes TB. #microscopy 🧪🔬 Image credit: Tony Fearns and Beren Aylan

It took decades to get non offensive LGBTQ+ classifications, but apparently the need to knuckle under to fascists really speeds up changes to subject headings. #Library #Libraries

When people ask how is Israel inciting antisemitism around the world, this is how. The glorious Star of David, a symbol of one of the great Abrahamic faiths, being used by a rogue state as cover for its torture and abuse of Palestinian prisoners, detainees, and hostages.

By going out on this limb I’ve proven my loyalty to President Trump. And now, to kick back and wait for the favor to be returned

The Stonewall Inn released a response to the National Parks Service removing the word transgender from the park outside of the Inn. A great reminder that we have to look after each other

My partner in crime has written a deeply personal book on her unbeileveable experience. I (perhaps biased) feel that it is a profoundly important insight into medicine and disability which, at it's core, serves as a beautifully effusive paean to all things inclusive: bsky.app/profile/grac...

On the 25th October 2018, from my hospital bed, I began to write. 1/5

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines. The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds. It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

This.

I wonder, Flask, whether the world is anchored anywhere; if she is, she swings with an uncommon long cable, though.

i wonder when i last had a day when i didn't see Elon Musk's name. we were all so young once

David Lynch gave us the language we needed to better articulate the indescribable strangeness of our shared reality. “Lynchian” is so overused because it’s a viscerally understandable word without any known synonyms. I can’t imagine a more beautiful artistic legacy than that.

Honor his memory by doing something strange, unraveling a riddle within yourself, and working on your favorite projects.

This is a beautiful tribute.

not Lynch's movie, I know, but god, what a sendoff

Completed in 1903, Monet's windowless silhouette of the Houses of Parliament with its atmospheric array of jewel-like violets and lilacs, cobalt and inky blues, and deep pink tones, appears mystical, as the building dissolves into the expansive, still waters of the River Thames.

A program in Brazil that gives a monthly cash sum to families living in poverty has an unexpected — and welcome result. A new study shows that it is dramatically reducing tuberculosis rates.

In the words of Tony Benn, asking about Elon Musk: “What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?”

Part of the reason I have been so passionate about getting my colleagues to come to Bluesky and setting infrastructure up for us here is that it's continually becoming clear how urgently we need avenues for reporting and discourse that are not controlled by billionaires and corporations.

Thanks to LLMs, I no longer have to ever relearn regex. That alone is worth $20/month.

One of the best pubs in London struggling for survival because planning is stacked in favour of some powerful NIMBYs. Everything that’s wrong with Britain.

Important context here: ● over half of farms are less than 49 acres (20 hectares) ● "a big farm" is 217 acres. Now let's see who's angry: ● Clarkson farm is 1,000 acres ● Lloyd Webber farms 4,000 acres ● Viscount Rothermere (Mail owner) 4,700 acres ● Dyson owns 36,000 acres

no one ever seems to highlight the single best feature of this app, the one that hands down holds this place miles above every alternative: no fucking advertisements, none, zero, not every 3 posts, not every 3000 posts, no brand activity at all!! where else besides wikipedia has that kind of freedom

Another day, another street cluttered with bikes to the point I can’t use the pavement…

Register now for the Crick Bioimage Analysis Symposium 🧫 We’ll be joined by leading experts to discuss the latest tools and techniques of image analysis and explore their future potential. #CBIAS2024 📅 25-26 November 🎟️ Online and in-person tickets www.crick.ac.uk/whats-on/cri...

Excited to be here, looking for disability advocates to follow please!

this is beyond amazing news

Some of my favourite scientific images are made in error- here I wanted a visual outline for my segmented macrophages and apparently ran into what I think is a bit-depth error, so it cycles over 256 grayscale values then repeats #science #art #sciart
