Not exactly urban or modern, but a great game of Albuera (16 May 1811) last weekend with the Rose Hill Wargaming Group. Around 1800 20mm figures on a 20' x 14' custom made terrain. More info and pics at newconverj.blogspot.com/2025/02/albu...

#ThrowbackThursday #TBT A really old render of mine featuring of Rhys Salcombe's Reaver Trans-U and Kenny Mitchell's little rover model. #Lightwave3d render except for the little guys - I painted them in photoshop πŸ˜ƒ

The GSh-30-1 is a 30mm autocannon mounted on Su-27, MiG-29, J-15 and many other planes. It can only fire 150 rounds before overheating, and comes equipped with a pyrotechnic cartridge that shoots a steel bolt into misfired rounds to clear them out of the chamber.

The North American F-107 was designed as a Mach 2 fighter-bomber able to carry a large tactical nuclear bomb in a semi-recessed ventral hardpoint with a 'saddle' tank, which required it to move its intakes onto its back. The result is a plane with a really unique look!

Next year, the EU will require cars to have buttons & dials -- not just touchscreens -- to get a top safety rating. This is a great move. Drivers can fiddle with knobs & buttons without taking their eyes off the road, but they can't do that with touchscreens. (Even better: Tesla will hate this)

I love ventifacts

There is an ongoing organized attempt to boycott Amazon and other large vendors on Friday the 28th. If you have the urge to spend money in protest of oligarchs, businesses don't get much smaller than Ad Astra Games, and we have wares (games about spaceships and jets! Tiny RPGs!) if you have coin!

A 128 cm wide gas-core nuclear rocket with Americium fuel at 7.5 GW: deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/ha... Within a wall heating limit of 100 MW/m^2, a reactor with Am-242m fuel can be 70% smaller than with regular U-235 and produce 200kN thrust at 3300s Isp.

Here is the finished drawing of the South Polar limb regions of the Moon. This descended from two steps of careful preliminary drawings and was done with Rapidograph technical ink pen on acetate. I have an overlay with a grid but I omitted it here as it added clutter more than it helped.

I guess this is an opportune time for another Moon art binge. In the mid 80s I tried to see how much of 'Luna Incognita', an area of the South Pole not mapped by Lunar Orbiter, could be filled in. Here is an initial effort based on the photos in the Consolidated Lunar Atlas.

A quickie personal project! The "N2" ? By the wonderful Ed Valigursky.

The system no one uses can stop Russian GPS interference – The Defense Department wants to revive it East Finnmark has experienced extensive Russian interference with GPS signals, and the port manager in Kirkenes believes that the Loran system would be impossible to jam.

Fixed-site lunar surface bases have disadvantages - what happens when you exhaust all the exploration possibilities within range? One possible answer: a mobile base - a very big rover - with unlimited range. After playing a fictional member of the Resistance a long time ago, I never could have imagined it ever happening in real life, but here we are.

Hey do any naval historians here know when they stopped putting fabric covers over the decks of ships this way?

1. Aside from anything else, an interesting question will be what this means for the Astounding Award, which was previously sponsored by Dell Magazines, i.e., the owner of Asimov's and Analog. Presumably Dell will relinquish sponsorship of the award; I wonder if the new publisher will continue it.

Nichelle Nichols in a STAR TREK production still.

I'm about to finish a series of urgent jobs, so I'll have time next week to write for The Spaceshipper. πŸ€— I can't wait. I've jotted down lots of thread ideas, and I've got ace questions to send to artists (hi!). The hardest part will be choosing lol

Development of the Birrin 'EVA' artwork. The second version had a little maneuvering unit, probably just pressurized nitrogen for helping move around outside; another advantage of more limbs.

I think this works! a mere 13 million polygons for actual geometry. But I used an AI upscaled & sharpened elevation map to make a BIG normal map with fine detail to overlay. Renders at a nice 20 seconds a frame.

I think what made the pictures of Greg Jein's models look so compelling in the 1993 book Star Trek: Chronology was that they were grainy and black and white. It made it seem like they were newspaper clippings.

Officially rejected from all the astro programs I applied to. Not surprising I suppose given how competitive it's become and my undergrad GPA. I'm also sure the current gutting of science funding doesn't help matters. Hopefully next cycle goes better.

If John W. Campbell was still alive, he'd be writing an editorial raging against weak-minded leftists who don't understand airplane collisions are necessary for human progress.
