The EU is looking harder at ways to seize Russia’s assets frozen after its invasion of Ukraine. Foreign minister will discuss on Monday setting up an International Claims Commission to make Moscow accountable & support 🇺🇦 Long overdue. @billbrowder.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

What is Elon Musk doing with the government information of US citizens, probably the largest database ever? Is it to feed his AI efforts? To find out more about his competitors? And how is it legal? Fascinating 🎧 from @karaswisher.bsky.social & @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social

Lie after lie has been told this week about how the Ukraine war started, from the Kremlin and the White House. Here's our News Agents video essay which explains the truth, and spells out why Trump clings so close to Putin and lives in his warped reality. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cufM...

Romania is a robust democracy whose people have shed blood for freedom & its constitutional decisions must be respected. As Putin’s war of aggression in neighbouring Ukraine continues, Romania must strengthen its defences to protect its people & interests. My i/w (in 🇷🇴) with @rferl.org.web.brid.gy

Dozens of inauthentic X accounts are posting coordinated, AI-generated content critical of CDU leader Friedrich Merz ahead of the German election, but failing to get any traction. Notably, they all misspell his name "Mertz", and seem to be very keen for Germany to restore energy ties with Russia.

“Now is the moment to recognize the scale of the seismic change unfolding, and to find new ways to live in the world that a very different kind of America is beginning to create” www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

Europe needs 300,000 new soldiers, 1,400 new tanks & 4% of GDP on defense to defend itself without the US. That’s why Europeans need to keep 🇺🇸 engaged by stepping up their own commitment now. Fascinating study from @guntramwolff.bsky.social @bruegel.bsky.social www.bruegel.org/analysis/def...

Public Service Announcement: If you are outraged about this whole Trump-Putin-Ukraine thing, here is one of the most effective things you can do in response. Because freaking out is not a strategy.

The transatlantic partnership is in our interest but it’s at a turning point. Rather than hand-wringing, time to muscle up. 🔹seize $300bn in frozen Russian assets & use them to arm Ukraine 🔹boost defence spending & industry now 🔹no new Yalta. @carnegieendowment.org @rmomtaz.bsky.social

Diplomacy and communications in the era of Trump & Putin. I compared notes with the great @larisabrown.bsky.social @thetimes.com David Remnick @newyorker.com & @bbcrosatkins.bsky.social on the Media Show. And then that Trump tweet on President Zelenskyy dropped as we were speaking…

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame. The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

“We cannot allow Putin to deceive everyone again.”President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has spoken to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the last hour.

Not the first time but still shocking to hear comments from the US president that echo those from the Kremlin. Trump falsely blamed Ukraine for starting the war (Russia invaded) while also wrongly claiming Zelensky has just 4% approval rating (its 52%). www.ft.com/content/2506...

Despite sanctions for Russia’s war in Ukraine, Europeans increased imports of Russian LNG, worth almost €7bn last year. France, Spain & Belgium imported the bulk, mainly through Dunkerque 🇫🇷 Bilbao 🇪🇸 Zeebrugge 🇧🇪 Some EU countries paid 🇷🇺 more than they supported 🇺🇦 ieefa.org/european-lng...

The Trump administration shld remember this isn’t “the conflict in Ukraine” but Russia’s illegal war of aggression in Ukraine. It should also have no illusions about “historic” geopolitical & economic opportunities. Russia won’t be prized apart from China & its economy is broke.

If we, Europeans, fail to spend big on defence now, we will be forced to spend 10 times more if we don’t prevent a wider war. As the Polish PM I’m entitled to say it loud and clear, since Poland already spends almost 5% of its GDP on defence. And we will continue to do so.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says after the leaders’ meeting in Paris that Europeans are “ready & willing to step up” for Ukraine and their own security. But details “still need to be decided.”

Brief thoughts on a European force for Ukraine. I think there is a degree of requirements paralysis. It doesn’t have to be hundreds of thousands of troops, or cover a 1200km contact line. Where it is deployed, and in what role, is more important than the overall size. 1/

Lots of diplomatic moves on Ukraine today. US special envoy general Keith Kellogg, who met NATO Secretary General Rutte at the weekend in Munich, is meeting him again today in Brussels & then consults with all NATO ambassadors in the North Atlantic Council. www.nato.int/cps/en/natoh...

Very significant move from 🇬🇧 PM Keir Starmer

The start of the 2nd Trump administration has been faster and more furious than the 1st. It clearly marks a shift with unpredictable & long-lasting consequences - for Ukraine, Europe & the rest of the world. My main takeaway from #MSC2025: less talk, more action. @munsecconf.bsky.social

Not a great idea to do this individually - force sensing & prudent planning should be done through NATO.

NATO SecGen Rutte calls for support for Ukraine & more defence investment: “Russia is on a war economy - we are not. We have to cut the red tape. To our American friends, it’s also good business because European allies spend 4 times in 🇺🇸 than the US is spending in Europe.”@munsecconf.bsky.social

Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity are unconditional. Our priority must now be strengthening Ukraine and providing robust security guarantees. In any negotiation, Europe must have a central role. Our Weimar+ statement ↓

Decent outcome for Putin, obv.

Some quick thoughts on US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s address to the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. Hegseth said the US doesn’t believe NATO membership for 🇺🇦 is a “realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement.” Indeed, NATO membership shouldn’t be negotiated with Russia, it’s up to allies.

President Trump wants a legacy as a peace-maker in Ukraine. But a deal on Putin’s terms would send a message of American weakness, not strength - and America’s enemies are watching. My take for @apnews.com @eburrows.bsky.social apnews.com/article/puti...

Pres Trump is winning initial skirmishes with allies, that doesn’t mean they’ve accepted the post-1945 order is dead. Instead, allies are appeasing him to save what they can/ wait him out. If he ever convinces them the order’s dead, things will get ugly. My column www.economist.com/internationa...
