Time to abandon my career, return to STEM, and propose the most ambitiously high-risk-of-mauling zoological research project of all time

Sabotage. Criminal sabotage. "[The NSF] is planning to lay off between a quarter and a half of its staff in the next two months, a top National Science Foundation official said Tuesday." www.eenews.net/articles/sci...

Do not miss the first AtLAST Forum tomorrow 6 Feb at 8 UTC. This is a platform for the community to exchange ideas and opinions about AtLAST and anything related to it. There will be two talks followed by a plenary discussion session, see: www.atlast.uio.no/news-and-eve... 🔭🧪

A great thread about the (VERY VERY UNLIKELY!) chance that asteroid 2024 YR4 could hit the Earth. 🔭 If it impacted above a city, it would cause tremendous damage - so even though its chance of impact is vanishingly small, we may need to think about an asteroid redirect mission to play it safe.

Even for someone who has studied galaxies his entire career, it is still deeply satisfying and somewhat surprising that I can plonk a 🔭 on our patio in the middle of Nottingham, point it over the roof of our 🏠, and see this.

Hello out there scientists. If you're having meetings or grants or anything else impacted by freeze of NSF meetings, please feel free to reach out to me to share your story. Signal: thealexknapp.79 Email: [email protected]

Do you have recommendations for books, web pages and other resources that can help get one started with learning about astronomy? Super beginner level? Please post them in the replies! 🔭

The White House budget office is ordering a pause to all grants and loans disbursed by the federal government. This means meaving e.g. large numbers of scientists without income, with nothing to live on, devastating their lives and ending their work. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

I really appreciate that so many astronomers put their data up online! In my particular case, it makes lecture preparation much easier. Here is NGC 3198, which I built from separate B, V and R filter images on the SINGS page of the galaxy. As you can see, we see that disk from the side. 1/ 🧪🔭

Spiders can fly using Earth’s electric field I think a herd of goats doing this would be pretty terrifying

Let’s play around with cosmic distances shall we? Because I don’t think the human brain can actually understand it. But I’m gonna use rice, and say 1 grain = 10,000 miles (~16,000 km). That means the circumference of Earth is just under two and a half grains. These contain all our lives 🧪🔭 (1/n)

Thank you so much to whoever put this very comprehensive list of #science Bsky starter packs together. This is just amazing: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

My latest for @newscientist.bsky.social is a response to a reader question about how we know that dark matter isn't just dust! It's a nice thing to take a break with, given everything else happening in our corner of the universe. Ask your library for access! www.newscientist.com/article/mg26...

Well. Just saying.

Colleagues (🧪), an excellent thread:

Why should the public care about the freeze on the NIH? Aside from the need for scientific pursuits to make our society better… -For every dollar we invest in NIH research, there is a $2.5 return. -Research dollars help fund universities that employ non-academics. (1/)

Just after NASA/ESA/CSA James #Webb Space Telescope began science operations, astronomers noticed something unexpected in the data: small red objects in the distant, young Universe. They became known as 'little red dots' (LRDs)... 🔭 More on these mysterious objects👇 🔗 esawebb.org/images/littl...

Just dropped a new SK8plotlib update! The game now has camera smoothing and framerate/physics timestep smoothing, making the skateboard feel all around more fun to control

The thing that’s most striking about this is that they set up an e-mail account specifically for people to report on each other for any attempt to implement “DEIA or similar ideologies” and threatened “adverse consequences” for NOT reporting.

How many folks at NASA went into astrophysics or the ‘discovering things about space’ business bc they oppose diversity, equity & inclusion, do we think? This is gonna be a fucking disaster…

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research. I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.

A timely cartoon for @newscientist.bsky.social

Looks like Comet C/2024 G3 ATLAS’s days may be numbered… the comet has faded & may have broken up post-perihelion as the nucleus fades from view, leaving a ‘tail-less wonder’ crossing the sky. Well, big news. I am planning to move the Space Library to a new home. And I need some help - in 35 years I've never asked for funding, donations or subscriptions for my Space Report, to keep it independent, but now I need to raise some additional funds. www.gofundme.com/f/fund-jonat...
