I wanted to try something different with the balloon tails on a new Image project, so I came up with these "string" tails. They're designed with a calligraphic stroke and the Layer Method of lettering. I also made an Illustrator Action to do the grunt work for me.

When fully retouching something is not efficient and the English text will have a white outline, I like to fill in the text and then make the outline gray. This helps define the boundaries of what needs to be retouched. This is important with digital outlines that have a consistent weight.

It can't be overstated how much font design affects digital lettering. Certain fonts just "stack" nicer than others. Even if they letterforms have similar widths heights, and the tracking is the same, the line weight and curvatures cane dramatically affect how well they stack to form a whole block.
