It's one of the most beautiful spots in Oregon — and it just reopened following two major wildfires. Drive to a stunning view of Mount Jefferson, or/and take an adventure into into the alpine wilderness. Story: tinyurl.com/y7fcypjd Podcast: tinyurl.com/bdhtuc2t

Oregon’s Department of Emergency Management says the Trump administration’s decision to abruptly cancel a hazard mitigation grant program will “significantly impact communities” across the state. OEM said this loss will seriously impede Oregon’s ability to prepare for disasters.

It's perhaps the wildest place in #Oregon — or maybe even the #PNW. A podcast on the best hikes and backpacking trips in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness of SW Oregon. And yes, spring is the time to explore: tinyurl.com/36ymayjd

While investigating Nike’s claims about sustainability, I started collecting paystubs from its suppliers. It’s been almost 27 years since Phil Knight acknowledged that Nike products had become synonymous with “slave wages.” I wanted to know what people in Asia earned producing Nike apparel. (thread)

Wild but really well reported story.

Shoutout to Daniel Bice of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, who’s been on the Judge Dugan story all week. You can catch up on his coverage here www.jsonline.com/staff/264800...

I've said it once and I'll say it again. Burgerville > In and Out. www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/l...

Detroit Lake will reach its "full pool" level for the season soon (its almost there now). I also looked at the season forecast, some things holding the city back and the fun events upcoming: fishing derby, fireworks, music festival and two major projects: tinyurl.com/ys28w46k

This was a fun story! Wrote about a major expansion to Eugene's Ridgeline Trail system breaking ground in May. It includes long-awaited mountain bike trails in addition to new hikes that showcase oak savanna / long connections: tinyurl.com/stkyy7jt

The testing center that oversees food safety says it "is no longer able to provide laboratory support for proficiency testing and data analysis."

Just BS.

I've been a writer and reporter for over half my life now. But damn it's still effing hard sometimes.

“They’re proposing we’re going to go toe-to-toe with these fires. So instead of more thinning and prescribed burning, we’re going to try to be suppression-centric. That’s going to go back to the 1930s ‘10 a.m. policy.’”

In the latest podcast, I went into: -Last call for swimming/fishing at Crater Lake NP. But also, will the boat tours actually happen? -Record numbers at OR state parks -A great but deadly season at OR ski areas -Detroit Lake drawdown updates. Listen: tinyurl.com/5hd6w4e5

People spend a lot of time wondering why the left is worse at using independent media to control the national narrative. A useful exercise is to ask why the left is also worse at selling snake oil and pyramid schemes, because I think the reasons are basically exactly the same.

Was trying to think of the last big moment in candy. My take: Starburst jelly beans.

Pretty big deal potentially. Original definition and Supreme Court decision stems from a case involving spotted owls in the PNW during the Timber Wars. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babbitt...

With wildfires becoming increasingly common and expensive in recent years, state lawmakers planned to bolster efforts to not only fight fires but prevent them. Those plans now seem uncertain with an unpredictable administration freezing and slashing spending.

Oregon’s wolf population increased 15% to a minimum of 204 animals last year, the first meaningful increase in almost four years. Wolves also continued to expand into the western half of the state, with seven packs now established west of Hwy 97. Story: tinyurl.com/2zsu56r5

In the latest podcast, Trailkeepers of Oregon executive director Steve Kruger talks about the group's mission and how federal cuts and a funding freeze could make it difficult to maintain hiking trails and recreation facilities this summer and in future years: tinyurl.com/3sn88tdx

This is wild, and seems to buck the trend everywhere else. Oregon's state park saw record visits in 2024. Jamie covers the factors well. I don't think we can undersell the impact of smoke and heat making weeks of the summer miserable. There's a reason the OR Coast smashes records every year.

Really, really tragic situation — every parent's nightmare honestly — that happened yesterday at Mt. Bachelor. www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/l...

Salem budget crunch showed its teeth this week as cuts come to parks, the library and other services amid a worsening budget shortfall. www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/l...

Great reporting from @alexbaumhardt.bsky.social on how EPA cuts are leaving Oregon projects in limbo.

ICYMI: Big news for the Santiam Canyon, Salem and Stayton, as the planned drawdown of Detroit Lake will be delayed until 2026 (but is still planned to happen). As ever, went deep on what it all means. www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/l...

"The report alleged that instead of the case shaping the show, the show shaped the case." This @jlussenhop.bsky.social reporting is wild and sad, and the whole story is very worth reading.

PacifiCorp has officially appealed a landmark class action lawsuit verdict that found the utility at fault for four of the Labor Day Fires. It's just one element of a busy moment in determining fault for one of the deadliest and most destructive events in state history. tinyurl.com/yacra963

This coming summer will be the last chance to swim or take a boat tour in the waters of Crater Lake for an extended period. Cleetwood Cove Trail, the only legal pathway to the shoreline, will close in 2026 and stay closed due to a construction project: tinyurl.com/3kan6hny

This is an absolutely wild but critical story from the SJ's Capi Lynn, about how a squatter moved in and took thousands from the property owners just by taking over their home. It's apparently a common issue in Oregon legislators are attempting to remedy. www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/l...

The poachers were given citations, and the sheriff’s office said the confiscated fish were donated to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

Permits for three of Oregon’s most popular wilderness areas return this summer, despite widespread cuts to Forest Service rangers. Will there be anyone to enforce permits this summer in the Jeff, Sisters and Washington wilderness areas tinyurl.com/5dxdpmva

Worth noting that a number of Oregon kayakers had already run Abiqua Falls. Jesse Coombs was the first and an awesome guy. He got a collapsed lung from his drop. www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/l...
