got my ticket and you should too - #CALC25 is one of the best conferences out there!

The CALC conference is back with another excellent line-up this year. The only UK library conference dedicated to critical library practice aka #critlib, and an amazing event in my experience. Check it out. #calc25

WHOOP! #Skybrarians

This year’s CALC conference looks amazing! I don’t know how @patchedelbows.bsky.social and @michelleab.bsky.social manage to surpass themselves every year, but they do!

Folks, CALC (Critical Approaches to Librarianship Conference) tickets are on sale today and the programme is 🔥🔥🔥 Massive congratulations to @patchedelbows.bsky.social and @michelleab.bsky.social for putting this together! sites.google.com/view/calccon... #critlib 📚

CALC is back! Absolutely incredible programme #critlib

It's out folks! Conference programme, list of abstracts and tickets for #CALC25. All details here 👇 sites.google.com/view/calccon... #LISResearch #LISConference

LLMs like ChapGPT don't know anything. They don't have knowledge. So if you ask them anything you then have to properly check the answer. So you might as well just...start by...getting the answer yourself using proper research, save some time.

I am talking to some #LIS students tonight about being a #ScholComm librarian. What are some tips you would recommend for soon-to-be grads pursuing this job path?

A new McCarthy era is upon us. Stupid, depressing, and dangerous as ever. I wonder whose name will carry the dunce cap in the history books. Too many are complicit. I’ll need to find upset and action, but for now I’m feeling grief at the dehumanization inherent to all this.

The UK's Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) are asking for 'examples of how content, reports, datasets, evidence, and tools are being removed by US authorities' www.cilip.org.uk/news/693964/...

Successfully spotted and reported one of those phishing tests from my work IT team. Along with feeling smug I can also pretty much pack up for the day now, right? 💁

Anyone with a Netflix subscription can see why Proquest’s new model will be unacceptable to libraries & users. Disappearing titles, content you don’t actually want, annual fee increases & if you can’t pay you lose everything. Libraries have purchasing power & should collectively reject this model.

Boycott AirBnB

I really hate doing this, but...If you're a librarian who sees themselves as being for social justice, who is appaled at the rolling back of DEI programs and researcher (and particularly if you're in the UK). This might support you in thinking of ways to help. facetpublishing.co.uk/page/detail/...

@cilip.bsky.social is concerned that the removal, hiding & modification of data, research & other information resources by authorities in the USA is starting to impede the vital work of UK library & information professionals, researchers & educators. www.cilip.org.uk/news/693964/...

Feedback from a student last year: "Highly recommend this course! It helped me successfully write a grant to build a graphic novel collection at our library."

Happy Valentines! 💕📚🧠

Good information literacy wishes for 2025. 'May we lift up our communities' says @woodsiegirl.bsky.social

Have you thought about making a nomination for the @infolitgroup.bsky.social Information Literacy Award? The award is open to all practitioners, researchers & academics working in the #infolit field in the UK. Self-nominate or nominate others before 14 Feb: www.lilacconference.com/awards/infor...

Good news to share with this afternoon's class, @patchedelbows.bsky.social?

Free wisdom for the day: don't eat chia seeds on the way to work. Doubly so if you then have to teach a class to 40 odd students.

Pathetic and dangerous censorship in the US where searches on www.nih.gov return no results for some terms including gender and racism though materials remain if you use other terms

Librarians aren't going to save us. Librarians aren't superheroes. They're just people trying to keep largely underfunded and overwhelmed public services going. Praise is nice; realistic expectations are better; material support is best.

Today is Retraction Day, when we observe the anniversary of the retraction (Feb. 2, 2010) of the fraudulent paper that purported to show a link between vaccines and autism. 🧪#medsky

Kettering’s last remaining cinema closed this week. It served an area with a population of 100,000. Unsurprisingly it hasn’t made the national press, unlike the proposed closure of the Prince Charles Cinema in the West End of London which has at least 6 cinemas within a square mile.

🤓 I am thrilled to announce that I will be a keynote at #LILAC25 at Cardiff in April 2025, which is organised by @infolitgroup.bsky.social ... See you there www.lilacconference.com/cookie-policy

I wrote a thing! It's about what information literacy can and cannot offer in troubled times, and my hopes for the future.

Super excited to announce the launch of the Gender + Sexuality Data Lab, a new data initiative at the University of Edinburgh exploring how data is reshaping the fight for LGBTQ equalities in the UK and around the world. 📊 gensexdatalab.com

Hello BlueSky friends. For those in the know about all things related to Communities of Practice and situated learning: where do you go to read things/find the most up to date info on this stuff? Looking for any and all content, so print, podcasts, videos etc.
