England suffered the largest decline in life expectancy improvement across Europe between 2011 and 2019. Hmmm...now who was in power in England from 2011 through 2019 (and beyond)? www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

And over at Wholefoods, nothing to see here...

And BREXIT was sold as a 'good idea'? What fools... www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Nearly half of the world’s habitable land is used for agriculture. Of this global agricultural land, 80% is used for livestock, despite meat and dairy making up a much smaller share of the world's protein and calories.

Meanwhile, egg prices.

Lovely day snowshoeing in the forest. Nothing else of consequence happening today, right?

Actually, it should read 10,000, not 1,000!

Proud to note that our 2013 paper in the Lancet series on nutrition has reached 1,000 citations in Google Scholar. Not a lot, maybe, for earth science and climate papers, but quite a lot for a single nutrition article. Great that it still has legs! lnkd.in/eR8KXMxy

Our new paper tracking process (or not) on food systems transformation globally using harmonized metrics. A valuable accountability mechanism: lnkd.in/ebRdbqim

Finally, some New England weather that allows for snow-shoeing. Yay!

Meanwhile, in Greeland...

Look up. www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

Totally agree. Leave.

Its well past time to stop calling it 'aid' and talking about productive investments in the world's future as a whole. This perverse strategy 'aids' no-one. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

Afternoon in Le Guilvinec, Brittany. Crisply cold but wonderful with it.

I grew up mere steps from this historical and architectural marvel. Like so much in today's Britain, it has been allowed to decay. www.theguardian.com/global/2024/...

My last #FoodArchive post of the year: In this month's #FoodBytes, I highlight the range of obesity studies and their contradictions, the IPBES report, tipping point naysayers, and COP fatigue. Check it out! See ya'll next year! shorturl.at/OHlxL

Festive London. Always fun!

What an astoundingly stupid own goal! www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Evidence is abundant that #agroecology can produce resilient, healthy, abundant food while protecting biodiversity, carbon, livelihoods & soil. Overcoming #hunger must be about providing access to food - not further industrialising the countryside (while BigAg profits).

We must account for the costs of #biodiversity loss from agriculture & other activities; as @pammcelwee.bsky.social tells the FT "We pass those costs on, whether it’s to insurance companies or to poor and marginalised people who are suffering from these pollution burdens or the malnutrition burdens”

Yikes! I grew up scrambling around in these caves where my own ancestors were involved in this event (on one side or the other...) news.sky.com/story/butche...

Unpacking The Evidence, a new podcast from the @houseoflords.parliament.uk looks at ‘Fixing Our Broken Food System.’ Food, Diet and Obesity Committee Chair Baroness Walmsley takes listeners on an in-depth exploration of what experts said during its recent inquiry. shows.acast.com/unpacking-th...

We can change some short-term household outcomes (like dietary diversity) through behaviour change interventions; but chronic poverty and food insecurity hinder deeper impacts. New paper on research in Uganda. Free access (until 27 Jan 25): authors.elsevier.com/c/1kECs7sxZ~...

Clear affect of India removing its export ban on the global market price for rice. Africa was most impacted by this artificial inflation. www.ifpri.org/blog/india-l...

New report on how climate financing can/should support #foodsystem transformation. Food systems contribute 30% of GHG emissions, yet the share of public climate finance to food system transformation fell to 2.5% in 2022. futureoffood.org/wp-content/u...

In 2022, just 9 countries exported 80% of the world's wheat, maize, rice and soy. We ought to worry less about 'dependency on trade' than on our over-reliance on just a few sources of grain exports. www.science.org/content/arti...

I suspect that while this will help, similar drives in many other African nations will be the only true fix. Ebola (like Marburg and other viruses) does not respect borders... www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

Coming soon,21st replishment talks for IDA. In 2024, US$31.2bn of IDA was committed to low-income countries, 70% going to Africa. That's good. But, "the funding is often there, but without the relevant mechanisms to use it efficiently." Must do better... www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

This is really worrisome for any successful #food system #transformation towards affordable healthy #diets for all. Incentive signals to farmers need to be recalibrated to what national dietary guidelines say their citizens should eat for optimal health; right now the signals are distorted.

Displacement within Africa rose 3-fold since 2009. Imagine, if you can, the next 25 years. www.theguardian.com/global-devel...
