Guerilla gardening doesn't have to be intimidating! Sometimes it's just an empty pill capsule full of sand and locally gathered native seeds.

Just making sure that everyone is aware of this crab that NOAA scientists found

In 2024, Bluesky grew from 2.9M to 25.9M users. With this growth came anticipated challenges in scaling Trust & Safety, from adding workstreams to adapting to new harms. In our newly published 2024 Moderation Report, we share details on what the year looked like for our Trust & Safety team.

Evolution tweeps: It has been a while since I've been in the literature, but can you recommend any papers that have looked at genomic shifts after rapid population growth and range expansion?

Back home and last week we put up an encore plus a loooong new secret at the end. We're bracing for 70mph gusts again tonight thru Weds, from the Eaton fire in our direction. Ready to go if need be. Here's the latest ep w/ the creepy heartfelt secret: www.alieward.com/ologies/fire...

Rodenticides (rodent poison) continue to kill raptors in Massachusetts, including owls, red-tailed hawks, and eagles. Paradoxically, it is these very raptors that help balance the rodent population. 🦅 www.massaudubon.org/places-to-ex... #Ecology #Naturalists #Conservation

Ecology friends! I'm looking for reccomendations for affordable books on urban ecology and mammology, especially featuring small mammals. ESPECIALLY rodents. Guide books, ID books all welcome. Not looking for pop science. #ecology #mammology #rodents #glires

Alright, second phase of applying to conservation and wildlife jobs! Wish me luck.

Meadow jumping mice (Zapus hudsonius) are some of my favorite small mammals. I haven't worked with or handled them yet, but they're very charismatic.

Aquatic sowbugs were to be expected around a detritus filled part of the wetland, but the big crayfish was a nice surprise! #limnology #freshwaterecology #benthicmacroinvertebrates

Did you know... that there are freshwater sponges??? Here's a photo I took of some in a lake in Michigan near me. I love finding them, and telling everybody about them. 🤓 #limnology #FreshwaterEcology #Porifera

Are there any starter packs for people who work in the Northeast USA and/or small mammals? #ecology #wildlife

Oh, yes, at this time of the year we're all waiting for Wisdom to return to her breeding grounds, the Midway atoll. Fingers crossed. Two things. Last year, she returned early December. And, apparently, 73 year old Wisdom got a new boyfriend in 2023. friendsofmidway.org/wisdom-a-lay...

We strongly suggest that academic publishers and other platforms that host research rapidly implement a Share to Bluesky button for their articles. Here's how: docs.bsky.app/docs/advance... #AcademicSky #HigherEd #Altmetrics

I forgot what a drag the beginning parts of designing an experiment was. A slog. A 25lb pack wading through a mosquito-infested swamp trudge.

A Social-ecological resilience starter pack: who else should be/wants to be added? go.bsky.app/H3dTqjd

I think I stored my gathered chestnuts improperly. I can always try again next year, but it's just depressing after all this time to think you're getting ahead, then run into a roadblock like this.

It's a wild time to be job hunting right now.

Is there an urban conservation starter pack? 🌆🌃🏙️ If you are a researcher or a practitioner working on conservarion problems in urban areas, please comment! Maybe we can create a starter pack! I’d love to follow more people doing urban conservation.

A beautiful story by Lucie Riglet! 🐝 🌸 Bullseye is prepatterend in Hibiscus and bumblebees can reliably identify food sources based on bullseye size. Congrats to the authors 👏👏 @slcuplants.bsky.social www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

These deepsea fish were so pitch black it was hard to get a good photo of them. Imagine being a little fish and seeing this guy come out of the darkness. #JustKeepSwimming

Just got back from volunteering at SERC's Global Change Reseach Wetland (GCREW) in Maryland. Very cool!

Things have changed a lot! Getting some ecology fieldwork in, getting my WFA, and biggest of all--the car!

Got a volunteer position! It's a little frustrating that I'm not compensated yet, but at least I'm in my field now.

Early career ecology definitely feels had to get into without a reliable vehicle. I have no idea how my contemporaries are doing it.

Friends, I wrote up a quick guide to getting started on Bluesky for folks who are used to old Science Twitter. Please share it with your folks who are joining. And please let me know if I missed anything or got anything wrong. 🧪 www.southernfriedscience.com/bluesky-is-n...
