Tesla earned $2.3 billion in the United States in 2024. You'd think it paid a lot in taxes, right? Well it paid precisely $0 in federal income taxes last year. You want waste and fraud? Look at what some big corporations and the rich are getting away with.

The point of the firehose of Executive Orders is to disorient and to demobilize. It's to instill maximum fear. If we know this, then that's already half the battle. This means that we have to respond with focus on those most vulnerable & targets. It means we have to refuse their attempt to scare us.

Focus on the examples of people showing up in marvelous ways to support and help each other. Yes there is bad news but it's not the only news.

this is what should happen. Rather than badgering individuals, the focus needs to be on governments and various institutions to leave. Once they do, more people will also leave.

At this point it’s been said in a hundred different ways, so I think people are being intentional about not getting it.

Harvard is worth over $50 billion but is telling poor students from Zimbabwe to borrow money for winter housing. What the actual fuck www.thecrimson.com/article/2024...

Big Pharma is the only reason anyone still dies from HIV: “We have the means to eradicate AIDS as a threat to human life. Greed is keeping this from happening.”

I try to avoid these kinds of generalizations, but the very online "Trump is anti-war" people are politically engaged enough and strident enough in their position here that I'm comfortable saying they really are just kind of stupid.

Yesterday, I filed two federal lawsuits against a man in New Jersey. He writes patently false things about me and other librarians. These falsehoods are very dangerous. They make me feel unsafe. They make a lot of librarians feel unsafe. For the librarians. #Invictus Doc and update in comments.

Please don't tell kids that old "First Thanksgiving" myth and pass it off as actual history. Share books like these this week instead.

The richness of supposedly being against cancel culture! Florida, oh Florida.

That "intellectual diversity" and "free speech" were trojan horses for right-wing power-grabs has been obvious from the start and I remain disappointed how many supposedly rational folks took bad-faith actors at their word.

the system preceding race and gender integrated education and DEI was not even facially "meritocratic" - elite higher ed served as finishing schools for rich failsons, half of admissions criteria were invented to keep out Jews. the naked cronyism is the America they wanted to return to "greatness"

Barnes & Noble is making a comeback: The world’s largest retail bookseller is expanding at a breakneck pace and is on track to reach its goal of more than 60 planned openings this year.

“ … Harris won the Latino male vote w/56% compared to 43% for Trump. ‘It’s categorically incorrect to say that the majority of Latino men voted for Trump,’ Matt Barreto, founder of BSP Strategies — one of the firms leading this electoral analysis — indicated …” americasvoice.org/press_releas...

Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens. Don’t think it won’t happen again when they come for the “undocumented.”

I've been reminding loved ones who are despondent that these rightwingers are NOT all powerful. It's OK to be scared but important not to allow that fear to distort reality. There are TENS OF MILLIONS of people who are not in support of what these people are planning to do. That’s BUILT IN.

If you have 45 minutes to listen to something this weekend, I cannot recommend this discussion with Daniel Hunter any more highly. He's an organizer's organizer and insightful AF. convergencemag.com/podcast/choo...

I went on a full on rant on FedBook as I am wont to do there about innumeracy. I CANNOT believe that people who are skeptical about EVERYTHING were actually going around saying that 65% of Native Americans supported that man. HOW CAN ANYONE BELIEVE THAT???? NO.

@erinlewis.bsky.social to a great new beginning!!

I’ve been avoiding election post-mortems because I’m tired of hearing the same bromides about the dangers of “wokeness” or reaching out to the “white working class” but this one from @gabrielwinant.bsky.social avoids those traps and provides a real analysis. www.dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...

Just thinking about how the expanded child tax credit would have lifted half our nation’s kids out of poverty.

The striking point here, if it is not obvious, is that the gap between people's very negative view of the national economy, and their relatively positive view of their own state is not based on their "lived experience." They are getting bad news stories from somewhere.

Wowwww

Latino men are sexist and won’t vote for a female president! Except they did. In Mexico. This summer. Where they voted for the first female president in North American history. Sheinbaum is a climate scientist, Jewish, anti-Zionist, and progressive. US Dems and neolibs are trash.

Newer data on the Latino male vote. Turns out the majority voted Harris. But Dems and liberals jumped the gun and carved out a racist narrative and vilified Latino males. What happens when Trump weaponizes this data against the Dems? And when more Latino males flock to Trump, who is really to blame?

It’s really pretty cool that one thing you can do to support people you like is ask your local library to get their book because it doesn’t cost you anything, it helps them, and the librarian gets to know someone actually wants to read a book and not just use the computer for Roblox
