Since arriving in Canada in 2023, she has joined PEN Canada as a #WriterinExile and received both the Humber PEN Scholarship and the @gbcollege.bsky.social residency. With her determination and these two opportunities, her first year in Canada has been full of promise.

But this is a different reality for Tala than just a few years ago, when faced political and personal persecution in Iran due her identity and work. "In Iran, living a normal life is a crime," Tala says. "As a writer or filmmaker, I grew up with a censored mind."

Her work at the College began in September. Since then, Tala has been visiting classrooms as a guest speaker. There she speaks about her life experience, as well as her professional expertise – she is the first screenwriter and second playwright ever to hold the residency.
