i saw a film at an indie theater in the netherlands last year on vacation and was stunned by how silent the crowd was and how not a single phone was ever out. the crowd was very young too, and most were hitting the bar inside the theater prior to the show. still, no belligerence.

this is very true. it was telling that after Helene last year, the anarchist co-op where i live was one of the fastest to set up and deliver aid and info. they stay ready with the apocalypse supplies & street medic training and are well-practiced in comms offline of the major internet platforms.

am i crazy or is what’s happening in LA not really protests per se? like they’re physically blocking ICE from carrying through deportations, that’s something different from a protest. it’s intervention to stop harm. i can’t help but think these commentators elide direct action & protest on purpose.

I’m just delighted to get a restaurant recommendation from you (because you’re rightfully very sparing and judicious with dropping recs on socials). I need these nitwits to stop blocking my blessings!

SCOTUS ended race based affirmative action several years ago. even if they hadn’t, deporting random grad students wouldn’t do anything to address race based undergraduate admissions policies

i’m saying that the entire political mainstream in the world’s highest functioning democracy has united to put principles over numbers. but go ahead and get in bed with maga if you think you’re special and won’t get up with fleas.

you should read about the firewall in German politics, where all political parties refuse to work with the far right AfD as they build coalitions on various issues. AfD now holds ~20% of seats in the bundestag so these numbers have real impact, but some things matter more than numbers in democracies

we may even have to work more, since having a stake in collective enterprise means we’ll all play a part in strategy & decisionmaking!

try to consume media that places current events in historical context. it’s not a new horror every day; it’s horrors that have existed, evolving.

Poor people don’t consume more treats than the rest of us. It’s just that our treats take the form of delivery services and restaurant food. When we don’t want to cook we tend to order out rather than popping in a storebought frozen pizza. *That’s* how our carts stay pure and holy.

i took a practical rainwater harvesting class last year at organic growers school that was really excellent. doesn’t look like it’s on the schedule this year but the instructor, Ben Portwood, is worth reaching out to.

i started going to a foreign film night hosted at a dinky little venue near my house. it’s just a guy with a projector and a criterion subscription, but it warms me to be in an audience of people of all ages who come to appreciate art outside of the western canon, amidst all the slop and xenophobia

sort of funny how rittenhouse failed to secure a sinecure because he’s such an oaf
