In the 1917 board game “Suffragetto,” two players compete as either police or suffragettes to defend their political bases — the House of Commons or Royal Albert Hall, which suffragettes rented out around 30 times between 1908 and 1913 to rally for women’s votes. hyperallergic.com/271362/playi...

I am exceptionally grateful to Dr Jess Wade for putting details about women scientists (and others) on Wikipedia. I would not have known about many of them otherwise. www.theguardian.com/science/2023...

At last - some radical action.

I thought I’d share the story behind my Genius Loci Digest, which is more than just a travel diary. After a breakdown in my 30s, it became a salve—helping me untangle anxiety, find solace, and move forward by connecting deeply with the places around me. 🌿 #Thread

It's been a remarkably busy year at the History of Parliament. You can read our Engagement Manager's review of the highlights over on the @histparl.bsky.social blog: historyofparliament.com/2024/12/31/r...

THREAD. So much rain has the fields floating in water. Not quite the conditions yet of 2021 - the images in this thread - but, in the east of England, still a practical lesson explaining so much about land use before under-field drainage began in the 17thC.

Women are the canaries in the coal mine of how bad Twitter is now. It’s not just about echo chamber blah blah. It’s unsafe— when huge accounts like this guy w/ 400k followers (Fox contributor too) single out a random woman minding her business so mobs can attack her. And no block feature!

If you're wondering about nice Christmas presents, how about a photo book of magical rainforests from all across Ireland? Help raise ecological awareness and make loved ones happy in one go!! (Photo: Easons, Dundrum.)

Anyone who thinks the Parthenon friezes would be somehow less well exhibited or preserved outside of London needs to check their biases and go visit the Acropolis museum in Athens. Which is incredible, and is ready and waiting to receive them. Oh yeah there's a fantastic pinball museum nearby too.

My little book about books (and libraries). Now free to read until 31 Dec www.cambridge.org/core/element...

Good morning

Despite producing more energy, bifacial PV systems with trackers lead to lower crop yields in agrivoltaic systems compared to static PV systems. There's still much to learn and do. These results may vary across different crops. Hey agriculture people, we need to work together! 🧪 🔌💡

Poetic word of the day: felicity - happiness.

We've just joined Bluesky! What do we do? Find out by reading this wonderful blog by Kate from Cumbernauld & Carbrain Community Hub. It's about a workshop on planning rights we ran with our partners @aprscotland.bsky.social, with support from the Corra Foundation. www.corra.scot/planning-rig...

Looking of the photo of the Underground railway tracks is a reminder that this project demolished homes conveniently located for the station. Reducing the catchment of transit to build more roads.

Oh my goodness I flipping love #wildflowerhour

Those accusing the ICC of being “political” do not fully understand the law. Post WWII, we in “the West” stipulated a set of shared rules that we believed applied to everyone - enemies, allies and ourselves. If an ally breaches those rules, the rules have not suddenly become “political” overnight.

In a Krusty The Klown-type scenario, the 2025 Cliff Richard Calendar includes a month where the image is "Cliff buying his outfits for the 2025 Cliff Richard calendar".

Neither of these people even live in Britain. One of them is a total crank that amplifies far right conspiracy theories. The other guy calls himself Peter Sweden.

Our lovely volunteer Tony with a new gate at Stedham Common nature reserve. In terms of how we manage our conservation grazing herds, we try to replicate the natural movement of animals through a landscape as far as possible. 📷 Ranger Dav

Empty - Liverpool St This is the second time that I've passed through this usually busy location at Liverpool Street London Underground Station without people. This was taken around 6pm on a Saturday so I wasn't expecting the beautiful emptiness! #photography

On Monday, Book at Bedtime features five short stories by me, separate but interconnected, one each night over the week. Hope you enjoy :)

Peace depends on holding those responsible for these crimes accountable — both inside and outside of Israel. There can be no justice without accountability, and there can be no peace without justice — that’s just silencing the oppressed. We must not stop until Palestine is free

Yep

This is a beautiful little book, one to re-read as winter approaches.

Feeling very grateful that I’ve picked up so many followers in the last week ❤️ To celebrate our new home here and the launch of my paperback on Thursday, I will pick two followers to win a paperback if I reach 1,000 followers by Thursday 📚 I’ll sign them if you want me to, too ✨

France has passed the 150,000 public EV charging point mark - a 35% increase on 2023. This includes more and more powerful chargers per site: a better user experience (chance of finding an unoccupied 🔌), while serving more customers and increasing utilisation. www.avere-france.org/publication/...

#COP29 is blocked over finance for clean energy for developing countries. Research suggests about $1tn a year in climate finance required. May seem a lot but it's: - 1% global economy - global energy spend $3tn already - Global pension assets approx $56tn www.theguardian.com/environment/...

#BBCPanorama great new documentary about #CarbonCapture Cutting carbon use is vital, so is reducing what’s already there! Scientists in our top institutions across the world battling to find solutions. A fascinating subject. LITERALLY WORLD CHANGING! Do take a look. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

The Mary Poppins thread has merely served to remind me that they used an American Robin (Turdus migratorius) and not a Eurasian Robin (Erithacus rubecula) and I will never forgive them. Why yes, since you ask, I am fun at parties.
