"It doesn’t make sense" World-leading forensic science centre that revolutionised fire investigations and has inspired a swathe of novels and TV is under threat as Dundee Uni battles £30m deficit - staff across the uni begin strike action today with @ucu.org.uk www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

On the 3rd anniversary of Russia’s brutal invasion, Europe is in Kyiv. We are in Kyiv today, because Ukraine is Europe. In this fight for survival, it is not only the destiny of Ukraine that is at stake. It’s Europe’s destiny.

"The real moon outshone the paper one, and, from a distance, it was impossible to distinguish the light flooding through the film scenes from the light flooding through stained glass." My optimistic-ish @heraldscotland.bsky.social call-to-arms on Glasgow's future. (with HTs to Italo Calvino).

Enjoying the new Alan Dimmick zines published by Café Royal Books. Interesting selection. Hoping that @peteralanross.bsky.social can track down everyone in this photo from Willowbank Primary (1981) like he did for Oscar Marzaroli’s Castlemilk Lads.

She sat smoking a cigarette The fire on her legs In the dust filled room she wished that the cigarette could last forever Rest in beauty, tender Bill Fay 🤍

Have a wee vote, folks! Be assured it's not me, Liz Lochhead and Jackie Kay in competition with each other - god forbid! It's you choosing a line by each of us to be carved on the Parliament Wall. www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/2025/02/publ...

I’m late to it but this @danigaravelli.bsky.social piece on prison suicides in Scotland is truly an eye-opener. Absolutely extraordinary that state-run prisons in the UK have Crown immunity.

Church crawling in the rain! Here is the fabulous All Saints, Clifton, #Bristol, for #SteepleSaturday. The 1860s church by Street was bombed in 1940, and rebuilt with modernist verve by Robert Potter in the 60s. The spire is timber sheathed in aluminium. Unexpectedly wonderful.

I just finished reading this beautiful book. It truly is a book about death, life, and love. Absolutely fascinating book, written with such care. As someone who loves to wander around graveyards, I knew this would be a hit with me, and it was. @peteralanross.bsky.social

Great to see Chris, man of many talents and also haircuts, being interviewed about his gorgeous debut novel HERMIT in the @heraldscotland.bsky.social this week

Here's a podcast I did with the @londonreview.bsky.social 's Malin Hay talking about suicides in Scottish prisons, particularly Polmont. www.lrb.co.uk/podcasts-and...

"It was because the book had fallen from the tree; I had neglected to replace it at once and our wall of safety had cracked. Tomorrow I would find some powerful thing and nail it to the tree."

“I wasn’t ready to do that. I wasn’t mature enough. I lost my mind, I lost my way & I fell out of love with writing for a while." I interviewed Chris McQueer whose touching, darkly funny debut novel Hermit is out on February 27. Online today and in the @heraldscotland.bsky.social mag on Saturday.

I interviewed Richard Dawson about his new album, End Of The Middle, and most of his older ones. I am glad to be alive at the same time as Richard Dawson. He is indeed a Master of Song. #fact #richarddawson @bandcamp.com @dominorecordco.bsky.social daily.bandcamp.com/lists/richar...

Peter said to tell you they haven't used the "article" yet, but they will eventually.

Gloom and dismay in Kyiv today at the US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia. As one official here put it, how can Moscow be serious about peace when it is killing Ukrainians? Last night two died in fresh drone attacks. Trump’s “appeasement” of Putin won’t end the war www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

“So many parents in Ireland are living in hell, trying to keep it together for their kids with no help. Any change now will be too late for my child. But I don’t want any parents to go through what we are.” Radie being a boss in the Irish Times.. ❤️ www.irishtimes.com/health/2025/...

Gareth Russell's book Queen James casts new light on James VI & I, viewing him through the lens of his love affairs with male "favourites". I spoke to Russell about the force of nature who lived life on his own terms despite the strife it brought him. In today's @heraldscotland.bsky.social magazine

Audrey Gillan's original documentary series on Tara and George was amazing - made with such tenacity and compassion. I don't doubt this follow-up, produced in the wake of Tara's death, will be equally brilliant though sad. On R4 tomorrow at 7.15pm.

A book of solace & quiet joy, Ross takes the reader on a tour of Britain via her churches and all their most interesting bits of history, architecture, & legend. As much of Steeple Chasing was written during pandemic lockdowns, it is a delightful, comforting, often funny read for difficult times. 📚💙

I've been fortunate to have Richard work with me on three books. He is an insightful editor who makes the writing better, and I’ve found him supportive and constructive at challenging moments. If you need help with your work, I'm sure he'll be able to provide it. Check out his new website for info.

We shouldn't take anything off the table before the negotiations have even started. It is clear that any deal behind our backs will not work. You need the Europeans, you need the Ukrainians. Extracts from my doorstep ahead of NATO Defence Ministers meeting ↓

wrote about Richard Dawson’s births, deaths and marriages drama End of the Middle for @newstatesman.com www.newstatesman.com/culture/musi...

I think plenty of people now understand that Richard Dawson is a once-in-a-generation kind of talent, globally as well as locally, but even by his own standards End Of The Middle is a truly great LP, his best since Peasant IMHO, FWIW.

'In the Age of Anxiety we find ourselves in, it's increasingly apparent that human connection, in its myriad forms, is the only thing that matters, and also the hardest. Dawson’s music propels us into its deep meanings' End of the Middle by #RichardDawson is tQ's Album of the Week buff.ly/4b0ilG9

I’m in my nest, my bomb shelter, and my fortress. I bring books in here. I cannot read; I mostly keep these books for company. I wanted to be alone, so I could cry, wail, or read Paul Celan aloud. But I only whisper his poem, which I know by heart www.theguardian.com/books/2025/f...

Looking at Women, Looking at War by Victoria Amelina review – in memory of the Ukrainian novelist who catalogued war crimes

This is how sadicalisation works. Jean Rhys became habituated to sadness in her life, which she learned to express in her writing; she in turn sadicalised me.

"Leave it to beavers" was _right there_

Ukraine has fought too hard for its freedom, only to have its future dictated by Putin and Trump behind closed doors. Any peace must guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and security on terms acceptable to Ukrainians, not just to Moscow and Mar-a-Lago.

Especially love this for Barbara Pym ❤️

Ok so I am a massive nerd for this stuff, but it always blows my mind that I'm crossing the Forum every time I get the 149 up from London Bridge. You can feel it on Gracechurch St where the hill flattens out. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

'Archaeologists have found a substantial piece of the ancient city's first basilica - a 2,000 year old public building where major political, economic and administrative decisions were made....The site, which will eventually be opened to the public, sheds light on the city's beginnings.'

This isn't a surprising but it is devastating. The great betrayal of Ukraine begins. We, in Europe, are in a place of danger. We all owe Ukraine & its people a debt of gratitude for its extraordinary courage. 😢

Brilliant journalism, by @danigaravelli.bsky.social, who has covered these awful events with admirable diligence, insight and compassion – and now writes the definitive piece on the subject, for @londonreview.bsky.social.

On St Gobnait's feast day, we'd like to share this tiny but awesome #SheelaNaGig. She forms part of St Gobnait's pilgrimage around Ballyvourney church in Co Cork. In pre-contraception days, women would rub their hankies on the Sheela and put under their pillows to ward off pregnancy* #SpeirGorm

Obsessing over Sharon Van Etten's new album. Love its spectral swoops, its gorgeous gothiness and all the '80s call-backs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc-R...

I went to see Maribou State in Glasgow and wrote about it for The Guardian.
