Hang on, rather than English nationalism, home rule ran into Conservative unionism and its opportunistic alliance with armed Ulster Unionist opposition. Unionism was a British phenomenon, splitting Scottish sentiment on sectarian lines that persist today.

BREAKING: Keir Starmer has spoken to President Zelenskyy and backed him after Trump’s attacks.
“The PM expressed his support for Zelenskyy as Ukraine’s democratically elected leader and said that it was perfectly reasonable to suspend elections during war time as the UK did during World War II."

They're fine for referencing, and far better than the abominable 'Harvard system'. But they aren't good for additional info and text.

5. What social democratic politics is all about, and what EU membership did, was to extend rights to working class people that the middle classes took for granted. Nostalgia was mobilised to take them away again.

4. Then there was the irony of my Remainer window cleaner's pal, he voted Leave to stop immigration. When my window cleaner challenged him about the damage to the economy, his mate replied, 'Doesn't bother me, I'm going to live in Spain.' Neither realised that Brexit would make it impossible.

3. And it was used. In my old Salford street, there was a woman who worked six months as a holiday rep in Corfu and six months as a temp in the UK. She chose to leave and go to Corfu rather than lose her job. And a who plumber tried working in Spain for 18 months (he decided it wasn't for him).

2. An example is freedom of movement. I live in Greece now. If I hadn't got residence before Brexit, it would be impossible. Wealthier people can get visas as financially independent persons or with a Golden Visa. Mobility has been taken away from ordinary people and restricted to the wealthy.

Had one installed about ten years ago. Brilliant, especially after the hub was upgraded a few years ago. Especially useful for me being away a lot. I wouldn’t be without it. Except I will be in the New Year when I move fully. I don’t think there’s an app to remotely bring the firewood in.

The record of our membership is not wholly negative. We need a bit of perspective. And the UK was successful in promoting its interests as members and an abject failure in doing so outside. This highlights the illusions of Brexit.
