The Beta Band’s 3 Eps is still absolutely ace. And a new Boards of Canada record would be welcomed…

From ‘Blame Yourself’, a spring poem.

Been moving and fascinating to read this incredibly detailed history of South Liverpool FC by Hyder Jawad. My great grandfather was a director of the club in early 20th century and he and his families struggles and many journeys are all here…

Very sad news about the death of Denzil Meyrick at the age of only 59. He was a truly original voice on the crime writing scene, with his twisty plots, mordant wit and memorable characters. And he was such an entertaining guest at festivals such as "Bloody Scotland". Condolences to his family!

It’s real….the US version of The Diary of Lies courtesy of Soho Crime. Out in August…

Visited @shakespeareandcompany.com this week….

‘Love Song’ from my book Blame Yourself.

Sundays 🖤

What an incredible book this is, James by Percival Everett. The final pages…

The new Jacob Alon single is very lovely….what a voice.

The very best 30 seconds on the worldwide web.

Edinburghers! I’ll be launching The Good Father at St Vincent’s Chapel on 2 July at 6.30pm with some help from the Queen of Crime @valmcdermid.bsky.social and the good people from Golden Hare Books. Be great to see you there if you can make it…

In Glasgow - 8th- 23rd March with screenings every day at Tramway

Quite moved and pleased to see this recent article on All The Galaxies. Thank you to Andrew in Australia for this. ‘All the Galaxies becomes a truly moving story of belonging and meaning and purpose and how belief shapes who we are and what we do.’ sparklyprettybriiiight.com/deep-tbr-boo...

Ok quantum machine, but can I finish this draft first.

Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today…..

Ten years since my first novel came out. Still fairly dark and surreal in places. Published by the now defunct Freight Books.

I see why they call it the Stationary Cupboard. It was very still in there.

Parallelograms by Linda Perhacs, a very beautiful record….

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Ah the new @mogwai.scot album is very beautiful. Indeed.

My new novel The Diary of Lies is published this year. Here is the suitably moody UK cover, courtesy of Birlinn. Out in August…. birlinn.co.uk/product/the-...

Thank you to George Saunders for letting me read this today.

2025 will see my fifth novel published, The Diary of Lies, in the UK and the US. Here is the US cover….out in August… www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/778177...

Listening to Golden Years this morning whilst reading international news and ‘run for the shadows/run for the shadows’ sounded just right. It’s tempting.

Oh no David Lynch. RIP. Twin Peaks was the life changer for me.

The title track of Norther by Ex Easter Island Head is a beautiful piece of music. A bit of Reich, maybe, in there. But lustrous.

The OXN album is so lastingly good, and James by Percival Everett so so fine, the madness of the world can recede a little.

What an extraordinary, devastating essay. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Two books in 2024. Thanks to Birlinn/Polygon/Soho Crime and Nine Pens…it’s been lovely to see them out there. A new novel to come in 2025.

I do love Sergio Pablo’s Klaus. An unusual and beautiful Christmas tale…

In Christmas joy news, our #StrangeCaseofDrJekyllandMrHyde is available on Marquee TV for everyone around the world to watch! (In the UK it’s on Sky Arts) If you like your chills Victorian and Scottish, this one is for you. marquee.tv/videos/selki...

Considerable excellence of Wolf Hall, the brilliant Unthanks, the continued brilliance of Rival Consoles, Tavener’s The Lamb, Michael Kiwanuka - all great this week.

A winter poem, from ‘Blame Yourself’ which was published this year by Nine Pens.

Big news from the fictional finance world! The wonderful MarkKermode has gifted me $50 million to make the films I’d like! Preproduction starts next week. Thanks Mark- there’s a spot for you on the red carpet. Ps excellent podcast.

I know they’re not truly comparable, and one is Notre Dame and the other is the Glasgow School of Art, but their respective fates seem very stark to me.

Lives Outgrown by Beth Gibbons is my most listened to album this year. Followed by Oxn’s album, Cat Power (Moon Pix) Bill Ryder-Jones (A Bad Wind Blows..) and Four Tet (Three). Most listened artists include these and Russian Circles, Rival Consoles and Underworld. All mighty.

Quite chuffed…The Hollow Tree has been named as one of the mysteries of the year by the Wall Street Journal. www.wsj.com/arts-culture...
