People who are going along with Trump now probably never thought they ever would do these things if you'd ask them 5 years ago. Worry about them today, because 5 years from now, they will be the war criminals, concentration camp apparatchicks and fascist footsolders "just following orders".

Whatever outrage you might feel, channel it into small and useful things, then move on I donated again to Ukraine today Trump and his cackle of lickspittles does not deserve my time or attention; so that action for peace of mind alone is worth a much more than I gave I suggest you try u24.gov.ua

I wonder how Matthew Memoli will be rewarded for facilitating the destruction of American biomedical science, the economy, and everyone’s health. Personally I hope at the very least he’ll be discarded by the masters he serves once he’s no longer useful like the disposable apparatchik bitch he is.

If I wanted to weaken the United States and make us less capable of combating 21st Century threats, I’d be doing exactly what the Trump White House and DOGE are doing.

Ending virology and vaccine research is far more dangerous than virology and vaccine research itself. We can mitigate risks in the lab, but we can’t mitigate the catastrophic risk of being unprepared and defenseless against emerging viruses.

Evergreen, sadly:

In a paper led by J. Pekar now available online, we revisit claims made last year by Lv et al. about early SARS-CoV-2 sequences. We find that their two T/T genomes were sampled too late to be likely evolutionary intermediates between A and B lineages, and are instead likely derived. ▫️1/ #PopGen

A Vanity Fair paper on the origin of the pandemic details some of the reasoning behind the FBI's "Moderate confidence" assessment for a lab leak, via a retired FBI senior scientist. It seems they were not aware of key information that rebuts their story 🤯 ▫️1/8 www.vanityfair.com/news/story/i...

It is worth paying close attention to the new bill "Dangerous Viral Gain of Function Research Moratorium Act" introduced by Senator Roger Marshall. If enacted, it will effectively stop all of virological research, including for vaccines. www.marshall.senate.gov/wp-content/u... 🧵👇

This is extraordinary. BEFORE the pandemic the WIV tried to publish a paper that contained “Lineage 4”…which does NOT contain a precursor of SARS-CoV-2. The paper was withdrawn after some rejections. They hid NOTHING. I’ve gone over this multiple times. Amazing that this nonsense keeps coming up.

I really enjoyed this chat. We discussed how the right uses the tools & audience relationships of social differently than the left, constantly evolving messages - and how this is very different than institutions taking a top-down approach. We talked about “free speech as meme,” rather than value.

This is true. Unfortunately the critical thinking ab what that means largely stops there. I would like to hear the interviewer then connect infrastructure to ethics, incentives, & governance. Ezra Klein doesn’t do this, so a lot of the conversation is nonsense ab how “Biden demanded censorship”

The most heartbreaking and avoidable push notification. A child has died from measles - which the antivax movement wants you to believe is a routine childhood disease. Their grifting profiteers have sold new parents fear and lies, and their deceitful, repugnant leader sits at the head of HHS.

So - I've actually led Ebola outbreak response at USAID. This is bunk from Elon. They have laid off most of the experts, they're bankrupting most of the partner orgs, have withdrawn from WHO, and muzzled CDC. What's left is a fig-leaf effort to cover their asses politically.

Since January 24, 14,482 adults and 1,541 infants have died as a consequence of a single frozen USAID program. USAID implements the PEPFAR program.

Brave to @jeffstein.bsky.social, WaPo's chief economics correspondent, for not wasting any time in stating what must be stated. Hopefully the first of many.

Spread this around. No curse quite like an Irish one. Thanks @seamas.bsky.social! "Musk is just a blinkered, blundering dunce; a man who thinks his ability to buy companies renders him a Godlike superintelligence, pathologically resistant to the idea...1/ www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle-co...

We do not owe “hand holding” or “politeness” to people who spread dangerous lies. A matter-of-fact correction is direct. If people can’t handle directness, then they should not repeat lies with such confidence. It’s long past the point of tiptoeing around science disinformation.

Even fascists learn. Privatizing concentration camps offers a far greater opportunity for grift and corruption than doing it through the state. State run camps would be sooo 1930s... we have moved on from then. Soon we will have crypto market for suppression and torture because that's less elitist.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists was founded by Einstein. Today in the face of mounting attacks on the scientific enterprise, I'm honored to have done a Q&A about how to vaccinate each other against the increasing deluge of misinformation. @thebulletin.org thebulletin.org/2025/02/how-...

Not being anti-fascist at this moment in history is anti-science. Probably always was. But cannot be clearer than these last few weeks.

How about if we act like we live in the 21st century instead of the 18th? Seriously, vaccinate your children. And yourselves. Measles is an awful virus, flattening the immune system, opening up the body to opportunistic infections. We should not be holding up the door for its return.

great piece from Kit on how to counter to threat to science in the US

They are going to stop #COVID vaccines to "reassess" something scientists assessed multiple times. mRNA vaccines are safe and save millions of lives. Besides RFK Jr., we also will have the new NIH director, Jay Bhattacharya, a COVID minimizer and denialist. www.dailymail.co.uk/health/artic...

To my colleagues, friends, and everybody else in the federal workforce, including from the NIH and the CDC, you are all heroes and deserve so much better than the obtuse insanity you’re all living through at the moment. Rest assured that we are with you in this fight and unafraid 💪!

I had a great chat w/@billkristolbulwark.bsky.social on social media as a tool of power & how the new right uses it differently. He also happened to randomly mention “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds” — a 📕 that significantly changed my thinking as a new hire @ Jane Street.

The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. ~20% of measles cases require hospitalization. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) — a fatal, neurological complication that can occur years after infection. Get the MMR vaccine, it works.

We're still getting this drip-drip of stories implying mounting evidence for a lab leak (despite no actual evidence). Meanwhile, the increasingly strong case for zoonosis rarely makes headlines.

Shout out to all the media outlets who said Trump disavowed Project 2025 before the election, before not covering its potential impacts and whitewashing how serious a threat it was to our country heatmap.news/politics/pro...

I'm starting to hear that NSF firings have begun. If you're affected and want to talk, please reach out via signal @jonlambert.12

And for all you Musk stans thinking "I don't like Elon either! But Mars tho!"🤡 China has a Mars mission scheduled for 2028 to return rock samples. That's before our next mission. China already has rovers on Mars. China has their own space station. And China didn't defund their own science research

new from me: Elon Musk's X appears to be blocking links to directly contact users on Signal Signal, the encrypted messaging app, has recently become a major tool for government workers looking to blow the whistle on DOGE

This is a call for signatories to speak up against the ongoing attack on science by the new US government. Feel free to share docs.google.com/document/u/0...

If you start with the conclusion and work backwards to produce the “evidence”, that’s propaganda, not research.

Funny, I remember the NYT being decidedly less interested in featuring stories about anti-science and facism two years ago, when they could have had an impact. Instead, their op-ed section did the best to discredit the reporting of their own science writers and voices of scientists under siege.

I’ve heard some stories recently of people complying with fascists’ demands after they were threatened. As a violence researcher (and someone who has received a good deal of threats), everyone should know that complying will not save you. It only teaches the threatener that threats work.

NEW: The Trump White House recently cited a Vinay Prasad in an email attacking the Washington Post and defending its research cuts. Prasad has built up a sizable online following sowing doubt about vaccines and COVID-19 mitigation measures. www.importantcontext.news/p/trump-whit...
