Thierry Henry?

It would be nice if they had a functioning cross rail operating between Bedford and Brighton. Maybe call it Thameslink? They already have a fully functioning track in place and all they need now is some trains and drivers to use it.

I imagine a shelf life of mere months is more than sufficient when it comes to thermonuclear weapons.

Are you suggesting a meme coin opportunity?

But, if you employ lots of people to discuss whether someone is English or not, and they increase the rate at which they discuss it, then haven’t you increased productivity?

Not sure I’d fancy annoying the descendants of General Currie?

UK did pay back huge debts incurred from lend lease program. But totally agree with your second point. And, being totally cynical, UK/Europe will find it far more palatable expending munitions, than lives.

What, and have Central London blockaded by Range Rovers? Driven by men in red chinos? Are you mad?

Soufflé is an appropriate description for our defence.

He’s evolved, he’s now employing mass energy and elite talent. That’s new, and I think it just might work.

Is that a dance craze?

Not passive aggressive at all, I just think you have too much faith in the ability for tech to dislodge a large army that’s well dug in. Also, Ukraine has been pulverised by missiles launched from inside Russia. Should NATO bomb Russia too?
comment in response to post
That is fair, though we could do it now, without significantly increasing our defence spending, and it would offer a spectacular return on investment given it offers insurance against potentially huge future costs.

Just not serious.

Have you watched Julia Hartley Brewer destroy Richard Tice over Ukraine? I really hate to admit it given her views on so many other topics, but it is masterly.

5 years ago was the right time though.

He was the only one supplying Ukraine with lethal weapons before Russia invaded, and Donald Trump MkI was literally blackmailing Ukraine to fabricate accusations against Hunter Biden in return for financial and military help.

Hi @samfr.bsky.social would anyone in your family have a view on Poland being able to “take Russia right now” if they didn’t have nuclear weapons?

7000 US soldiers died fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The idea that increasing defence spending will change the dynamic misses one very important point - no Western European country would tolerate losing 10,000+ soldiers, let alone the 100,000s lost in Ukraine to date. Russia knows that.

Blair kept to Major’s spending envelope in his first term. He only started spending after they’d won the second election.
comment in response to post
Agree. But to suggest it just takes a leader with agility and deftness is optimistic given our media landscape. By all means go for it, but expect an almighty backlash, regardless of merits of what they need to do.

I know these are testing times but surely there must be a consequence for employing “fiscal fruit”?
comment in response to post
Completely agree.
comment in response to post
Your final sentence is my point. Deftness and agility wouldn’t be sufficient, regardless of which Labour leader was in post.
comment in response to post
Agree with all of that. But we could cross Tony Blair with peak Torville and Dean and he still wouldn’t have the deftness and ability to change the playbook without getting a solid kicking from an openly hostile media.
comment in response to post
No, he has to do something rather than just squat there like a pregnant toad. But we also need to acknowledge the hostile environment in which he’s operating, and forgive him the media kicking he’s going to get, whatever he does.
comment in response to post
I know he’ll have to bite the bullet, he has no other choice, but I think it’s unfair to suggest a Labour leader can use deftness and agility in the face of such a hostile press. He’ll get nailed, so better to do it early.

The right wing media and BBC would spend the next 4 years bleating about broken promises. And the very first question in the first electoral debate will be whether the public can trust a PM who breaks his promises.
