Given our number of applicants and the median salary of faculty, tax payers spent roughly $45k on faculty writing letters of recommendation.

Minimum 30k for a summer. That would just cover stipend and room and board. 50k would ensure we have staff support and travel funds because people move to EL.

Yeah one thing is clear: the rank-and-file POs are trying their best in an impossible situation. If it helps any, many REU site award notifications don't go out until March or April normally (see data below). But obviously, we're not under normal times right now...

Thank you for compiling these data, David.

Not the official rejection. We’re in a holding pattern but told we will not be moved to funded pool. If funding remains, we might be funded in some way. Official notice would occur after that. To be clear, our PO is tryin so damn hard to do their job and has always been a dream to work with.

I’ve been continuously disappointed. I’ve written a lot about it. 😂 danny.hellmo.space/posts/we-nee...

Point of clarity, if funding remains after awards go out, then potentially we could be funded. I’m not holding my breath given the current state of things. Also, we cannot keep these students waiting in limbo until we hear. They have to make decisions.

That’s the worst. I need my 5am-7am me time. Everyday. 😂

I don’t love taxing universities and not billionaires. But as someone at a state school without a mega endowment, kinda feel like maybe these schools should dig into that money to do something, anything right now.

I was involved in an NSF-funded REU program at NC State a few years ago. Here's a short video featuring the students in the program talking about how valuable it was for them in terms of developing their skills and helping them embark on scientific careers. Cancelling programs like this is senseless

We are living in extraordinary times, unfortunately.

So many wonderful students over the years. At least 120 in my time at MSU. Many of them joined our graduate programs. Many of them went elsewhere. And all of them had intense research training all summer. They built friendships and connections that they will have their whole lives.

I’ve been lucky to be a part of our #REU program since 2013. I’ve enjoyed being a mentor and running a short course on machine learning for them in last five years. I hate to think this is the end.
