In fact I blame the millennium for ruining New Year, everyone needed an “event” for 2000 and it became about big spectacles. New Year before that was spur of the moment random trip, night club in a town, local pub or family at home. Kept it simple.

I remember New Year in Edinburgh about 30 years ago, we left a pub (a real ale’r in our group wanted to “move on”) couldn’t get in another, bought some whiskey from an offy and partied in Princes Street (before ticketing became a thing). Was excellent, you don’t need the organised fun!
