Welcome to the Bluesky account for Stand Up for Science 2025! Keep an eye on this space for updates, event information, and ways to get involved. We can't wait to see everyone #standupforscience2025 on March 7th, both in DC and locations nationwide! #scienceforall #sciencenotsilence

Approaching 700 people RSVP’d for this which is more people than I have ever convinced to go to anything. Wild. Ran slides past 2 other street artists and they gave it the stamp of approval. We call that peer review.

Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs. It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

What’s my day been like? (Laugh-cries in fishy phylogeny) For real though…I love it.

At least 3 former students were included among the firings at NOAA. Probably more. These were smart, passionate young people who wanted to help save the ocean that we all depend on. They deserve better. The American public deserves better.

I am a highly trained and extremely skilled communicator. I have absolutely no idea how to talk to someone who believes that a 27 year old with $75,000 of student loans working to make sure drinking water is safe is an out of touch elite, but Elon Musk is fighting for them.

Do I know anyone going to #ECCC2025 who would be willing to get up to a little mischief on behalf of science?

“The Environmental Protection Agency will move to reverse its 2009 declaration that greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare” Listen someone needs to tell Lee Zeldin that the cat’s outta the bag on this one.

Truly, if you've never participated in the charity battle over at Wild Green Memes for Ecological Friends, you should. 💕 #wgmfef #wgf #charitybattle #ecology #atleast74practicingsharkresearchers

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

We've got a good one for you today! This is the skull of an Indo-Pacific Blue Marlin that we caught in Okinawa. This particular fish is special because it is both the largest fish that I've ever collected, and ever scanned. S/O to @jaimiagray.bsky.social for helping out with the scan!

Could talk about head morphology and maxilla size and reach relative to the eye…which I did. But…there are other ways… #teamfish

Wednesday vibes. Open mouth. Scream into void.

I leverage evidence-based #scicomm approaches to create tools that people can use to take action to make their efforts to share science 🧪 more effective and ethical. But we need a bigger-picture tool, not just "doing scicomm" tools. 🧵

That time when your breakfast looked a lot like your lab sample…

I have just discovered Eumecichthys fiski 😍. Does anyone on #teamfish have photos they could share?

Have a Northern pipefish, Syngnathus fuscus. By the way, the fish aren’t really bright pink. That’s the dye used in processing samples, making it easier for us to see. #teamfish

What hashtags do I need to find the professional fish nerds? #ichthyology #ichthyoplankton #fish #bloop I don’t know. I need more fish nerds in my life.

Just gonna keep posting fish. Until I actually resurrect Pocket Pandas.

Sometimes it’s fish. Sometimes it’s silly. Sometimes it’s silly fish. First doodle in awhile. Strangely appropriate. Uh…and it’s for class.

Christmas eels

Not quite enough Atlantic Croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) to cover the entire 4” dish.

Just a couple of unsolicited fish pics.

Still sad that there doesn’t seem to be any research examining the differences in marine and freshwater larval fish morphology at the genetic level. Marine larvae look like little aliens. Freshies look like fish. I also don’t know enough to know if this is something that would ever be funded. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did you people know that the leader of one of the world’s organized largest fisheries crime syndicates is called the codfather? 🧪🦑🐡

This is what 1700+ larval fishes look like. Container diameter is 3”.

On one hand, fish taxonomy is an active scientific field (yay!). On the other hand, I am very interested in marine vs freshwater ichthyoplankton morphology - particularly at the molecular level - and so far I have been told no one is doing any research here. Boo.

Rough Silverside (Membras martinica) eggs are so cool.

Instructor: Only scientific and professional language!!! Me: You know…if all you ever do is speak about the natural world clinically - treating it like a cold, dead thing - the most people will ever want to do is poke the dead thing with a stick. Or mourn. That doesn’t seem very helpful.

Working on my nature journal - instructor did not appreciate that my local squirrel posses was referred to as the Fluffy Butthead Brigade. They are actually the Fuzzy Bastard Brigade. Turns out I am very much in favor of colloquialisms for informal sci-comm.

Sometimes I get to catch a glimpse of their last meal. Morone saxatilis likes copepods.

Less than a week til the start of #SciArtSeptember! 🐡 - Huge thanks to all who are sharing and reposting. 💜 So excited to see everyone’s work. - #SciArt #SciComm

Once approved, the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary will be the US's first tribally-led national marine sanctuary.

Holy shit - I love larval fishes.

This is a member of the Fuzzy Little Bastards Brigade. He has been dubbed Sir Wet Nuts of the Narrow Tail. After a long drink, he hopped into the water dish and proceeded to stuff his face with nuts.

Not that I expect to get answers yet - but where is ichthyology BlueSky? Who should I follow?

Under the microscope: Morone saxatilis (Striped Bass) egg and Morone americana (White Perch) larva
