I think giving Chuck Schumer a platform is exactly what is necessary right now. Like giving Biden more air time in July 2024. It might be agonizing, but people need to see clearly what state the Democratic leadership is in.

Amazing story. I'm sure you saw, but at the same time, the current administration is intervening to stop exactly this mRNA vaccine research going forward. For reasons.

The number of people that will die from this administration is incalculable. And for absolutely no justifiable reason.

When public libraries go away, they won't just spontaneously reappear under a future administration. These will be catastrophic, permanent losses.

The only alternative theory is that literally it all came down to General Schumer abandoning the battle and several scared troops following his lead. But I don't believe that. I just can't fathom that Brian Schatz, from a safe blue state, has less political courage than almost every House Dem.

It's the only rational explanation I can come up with. Dems thought they could power play the GOP in the House and force them to the bargaining table. GOP called their bluff by passing the CR. Centrist Dems voted knowing Sen. Leadership (Minority Leader & Whip) would backstop them on a shutdown.

This is a good message, but it's undermined by the party's actions as a whole.

I recognize that voting against cloture and precipitating a shutdown would be bad for federal workers. But an opposition party that stands for nothing but enablement is far worse. It destroys hope.

Just so I understand, Senator @schatz.bsky.social is saying he would have approved literally any GOP funding bill. What's the point of even being a Democratic Senator if that's your position?

Everything I've ever seen from Democrats leads me to believe they don't believe they should have power, and therefore won't exercise it if it's available. We need a new party.

I think it's fair to judge your efforts by the company you keep.

If they vote "Yes" on cloture, they should vote "Yes" on the CR. At least have the courage of your convictions.

The idea is we can support atrocities in a Sudan civil war while also completing ethnic cleansing in Gaza. Some "two birds, one stone" thinking from the Administration looking to hit the high score on human rights violations.

It was a great question, and well framed. Absolutely indefensible answer from @schumer.senate.gov.

The experience of U.S. politics in my lifetime is that there are always just enough Democratic votes to defend the status quo and business interests, but never quite enough to fix anything they've promised to fix.

The other possibility is that Schatz is Whip and Hirono is following his guidance, in order to make sure there are more than 8 Dems voting "Yes," so that no single one of them can be considered the clinching vote. Just speculation though.

The only reason I can think of is that HI has one of the larger proportions of federal workers in their state (~4.6% of workers). But I'd argue that no federal workers are safe under the current administration. That's why taking a stand now is imperative.

I have many close friends who are federal workers. One has already been fired as part of the administration's illegal cutbacks, and the rest are at risk whether the CR is passed or government shuts down. No federal worker or agency is safe until the Executive Branch adheres to allocated funding.
