Congrats on ep 1! People should own and be in control of their own data and social graphs, with the apps as interoperable tools. Or we keep repeating the enshittification. B/c of the collective action problem, new apps need to have value to people early, without needing millions there first.

No it’s using a different protocol we developed called Bonafide where each person has their own database with their data and social graph. Bonafide will be open source so other people can build other apps eventually. Pools is more for sharing with personal connections. Different than social media.

Guess he couldn’t resist the gravity of Musk’s orbit.

The model of being able to reach anyone is too lucrative. It’s like a politician is giving a public speech, and then some random anonymous person grabs the mic, but we all keep listening. People make bots to piggyback on existing conversations and reach strangers. It’s too easy!

The model of being able to reach anyone is too lucrative. Bluesky is trying to be different but it’s the same thing where everyone talks to everyone. So of course it attracts people who want to make bots and reach strangers. You should be in control of your own network online, not some site.

I’m here among the bots and noise to try and tell people about the new thing I’m working on where there’s no bots or noise!

Another social media black hole.

The tech bro gives tech a bad name, then tries to trademark it.

It’s not a good idea to have everyone talking to everyone all the time, even if Bluesky is an improvement on what happened to Twitter/X. Need some different approaches.

Yeah, people should have their own network with interoperable apps. Let them own their data and social graph. The power of the network effect should be held by the people, not the latest popular meeting place

But where else can you humblebrag about your personal best marathon time while maintaining work life balance?!

Enshittification transcends language.

It’s hard to get people to leave addictive SM. New apps won’t have the built-in attention-grabbing dopamine. I think we need to ween people off with other apps that don’t try and do the same thing that SM is doing.

The collective action problem makes it tricky. The solution might not be to have everyone leave en masse to a new social media platform where everyone talks to everyone, but something more grassroots, with people building their own networks that have value without needing millions to be there first

We need to support more humane tech because people need real alternatives.

Part of the problem is that the popularity exists as a metric within their network, as opposed to how it works offline where we each have our own personal networks and we don’t have visible metrics of everyone else. Most social media platforms work the exact same way.

We need more technology that respects people. People need real alternatives.

The news cycle moves fast. Grassroots local efforts are often slow, but they last. They’re worthy of our attention and effort.

Everyone doesn’t need to be talking to everyone all the time in the same place. Instead of the apps/sites being the network, each person should have their own. Lots of excitement about Bluesky but the moderation issue will be tough to solve for any app trying to be the meeting place for everyone.

The way we share should be more personal and less performative. If this resonates, try Pools. (3/3)
