There are two types of people. Those that ask questions and want anseerrs, want to understand why that answer is so, and guage the likelihood of correctness. And those that start statements with, "I asked ChatGPT and..."

I feel like the biggest piece of advice I wish I could give my 20-year-old self is "floss and be careful with your teeth in your early 20s because oh man it sucks to deal with those consequences as you get older!"

If you think this is about small businesses, then I have a bridge I'd like to sell myself through a chain of faceless shell companies of indeterminate ownership.

‘Move fast and break things’ only works for people who have never had to clean up after themselves.

Back in the mid-20th century, the FBI could place an individual under surveillance solely for being LGBTQ. This is what enabled the anti-queer witch hunts of the McCarthy era. Now, DHS permits surveillance of LGBTQ people again. Just being queer makes you a suspect. www.advocate.com/politics/dhs...

Grok, the AI built into X, suggested this reply under President Zalenskyy’s tweet thanking us and hoping for peace. “Which territories might Ukraine cede?” The AI varies its suggestions, but they are all combative, as if trained on hostile rhetoric, whereas the real replies are supportive of Ukraine

I cannot describe how devastated I am right now.

Salesmen win by understanding people. They don't have to have a good product. They don't need to be right. They just need the people to BELIEVE. Elon is a used car salesmen with a lot full of lemons and a customer base full of believers.

The DC police last week sought to arrest a sitting member of Congress, a Florida Republican, for physically assaulting a woman in DC. But the US attorney’s office didn’t sign off on it. www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/f...

Zelenskyy offers to step down in exchange for peace and Ukraine’s Nato membership “If it brings peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, I’m ready. I can exchange it for Nato [membership],” he told reporters on Sunday... “If such conditions exist [I will step down] immediately.”

This timeline is stupid, stressful, and absurdly dangerous. I'm just over here trying to make the best of it, but the avenues are limited and all of it tests my patience. Then I look at my wife and my kids and realize... this is good.

“The American team has almost no experience in high-level international negotiation, no regional expertise on Ukraine and Russia, and no relevant foreign language knowledge."

I read this whole thing and I'll say that it was perhaps the longest, most uncomfortable cringe I've had in ages. Just... Trying to understand the personal journey that would lead someone to frame a relationship this way.

remember, signal is the only decent dm platform. all the others exist for sharing a signal handle, the way internet explorer is there to install chrome

Increasingly, America’s rich and powerful—like Trump and Musk—use defamation suits not to win but to inflict ruinous expense and suffering on the defendants and solicit attention, support, and fundraising for themselves. This is a grave threat to free speech. @kenwhite.bsky.social

"One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all." Arthur C. Clarke

My question is, what's the consequence of doing something illegal (like freezing funding at NIH)? It can't just be to "stop doing it" as that would greenlight intentional short-term law-breaking to meet similar goals. Our systems continue to be ill-equipped to deal with these threats.

I'd like to congratulate all 56 of the ACM members that have joined the ranks of ACM's "Distinguished Members." It's no small feat. It's hard earned and well deserved. www.acm.org/media-center...

The ironic thing about this whole "no more X as a gender (sex) marker" mandate is that it could have affected me too. I applied to get an X everywhere. I'm not trans, I'm white, I'm male, I'm very comfortable with my (hetero)sexuality. I believe my gender shouldn't be anybody's business but mine.

Just a reminder that the economy was objectively VERY good before Jan 20. As everything is always someone else's fault in this administration, I dread the revisionist blame game that will echo for years.

Elon Musk is a terrible president.

I will never understand the conservative fragility with respect to transgender people. It's so much (1) easier (2) healthier and (3) more productive to simple not have an opinion and just let people be (valuable, tax-paying citizens). The obsession with gender is downright creepy.

I spoke to a talented junior scientist who just got a good faculty job offer in the US and they told me “well I wouldn’t move to 1930s Germany either” so that’s how that’s going

The Massachusetts AG Andrea Campbell knows whether Medicaid will be affected... ask her.

Missing #omnios today. I just don't have time to do anything right now, but I wish a few of my machines were running that instead of #ubuntu. omnios.org

I feel like there is a possible future in the United States where Jan 6 is our Tiananmen Square. The whole world will know the truth, but people inside the borders here won't be able to talk about it with out harsh retribution. It's pretty fucking surreal.

I cancelled my Adobe cloud subscription. "You'll still be part of the Adobe community." You charged me a $29.99 cancellation fee. Honestly, who does that for SaaS services these days? No, I'll pass on being part of that community.

This is really interesting. Groundbreaking study on the value of libraries and “third places.” “A whopping 82% of people who used the library’s physical space and 79% of people who physically attended programs reported more optimism regarding the future, compared to only 58% of digital-only users.”

Once-in-a-generation storm... Uh, sure.

I spent the last month reverse engineering Call of Duty's anti-cheat! Blog post here: ssno.cc/posts/revers...

Tough loss #ravens. Play better next year.

to recap: — Trump was *for* the TikTok ban — which the GOP Congress passed — and the GOP Supreme Court upheld — and even though Biden said he wouldn't enforce the ban, TikTok shut down anyway — so that Trump could "save" it — and the media fell for it we really do live in the dumbest fucking country

Little guy just peed on his own face. #choices

That might have been the worst (as in directly game impacting) officiating of any playoff game I've ever seen. The Texans outplayed the Chiefs by every measure. Bad calls gave the game away. For every point but the first 3, the Chiefs were assisted by outright bad penalty calls. #nfl
