The bombing of Iran was a reckless escalation. I hope the US's worst impulses are reined in before the situation worsens even further.

I miss the days when the U.S. had thoughtful heads of governmental agencies. This interview is worth listening to, even if it was conducted by Russ Douthat. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/19/o...

After years of struggle for trans rights, this regressive turn has little to do with winning the argument but simply the accrual of power. This on top of looming war in Iran, tariff economy, possible gutting of Medicaid, political assassination, ICE illegality, etc.. www.huffpost.com/entry/suprem...

Again, one of those gut punch moments where I'm not surprised but still shocked. This cannot happen in a civil society. www.huffpost.com/entry/minnes...

I'll believe that conservatives really want viewpoint diversity when that principle is applied to other major institutions - churches, corporate boards, law enforcement, think tanks, the military, and so on.

This move is troubling, yet another sign of capitulation by a major broadcaster. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/10/b...

A little moment of sunshine. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/11/s...

Sadly, it's not surprising to see, but it's still jarring. www.huffpost.com/entry/austra...

Very cool. Coco's a great player, and she seems like a good person, too. I hope she wins several more majors. www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/j...

I'm no fan of Santa, except for his name, but this kind of state overreach into campus hiring decisions is really troubling. Also, I can't think of one other E Asian American president of a top university, so this un-hiring is also symbolic in other ways. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Thank god. He's not great, but he's way better than the other guy... or the previous pres. apnews.com/article/sout...

Sarcastically pretending to care, talking down to vulnerable constituents, and evangelizing in the end. Perfectly encapsulates her side of the political aisle. www.newsweek.com/joni-ernsts-...

The Sinophobia, the shortsightedness, the loss of intellectual talent, and the nativist attempt to horde knowledge while ironically at the same time attempting to undermine the academy. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/28/u...

2 zombie shows that I've watched have included well-liked E Asian American men characters. Both shows have ended seasons on a cliffhanger with the deaths of those same characters. Kinda sucks.

Commodifying healthcare produces perverse incentives. The U.S. urgently needs single-payer or at least a highly regulated healthcare system so that costs are reasonable and so that profit interests never supersede care. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

This was never a secret. People just weren’t paying attention. Gift article https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/18/us/project-esther-heritage-foundation-palestine.html?unlocked_article_code=1.IE8.fM31.nAz2f6sO5hLW&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Not only does AI hallucinate, when its creators want it to, it can also spread intentional mistruths. Here's a story about Grok inserting statements about "white genocide" in unrelated queries. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

This is the kind of stuff that happens when you weaken federal regulation over businesses. I've seen it on my receipt, too, and then you have to figure out whether you wanna spend time with customer service while letting your ice cream melt. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

The absurdity of this administration knows no bounds. www.cnn.com/2025/05/12/p...

I can't think of any other industrialized country without a public media sector. www.cnn.com/2025/05/02/m...

I tried watching "Havoc" to take my mind off of things, but I couldn't get past the premise - grizzled white cop single-handedly taking down an E Asian criminal organization. Maybe, it gets better, but it starts out with a b.s. "yellow peril" setup. I'm gonna watch s2 of "Weak Hero," instead.

When typical politicians see very bad poll numbers, they freak out, try to shore up support, and seek new messaging strategies. When authoritarian politicians see very bad poll numbers, they freak out, strike out against critics, and tighten the screws as much as they can. Just a heads up.

The advice I keep hearing around town is to carry your documents so that you can confirm your identity if ICE tries to nab you. Umm... so, "carry my papers?" Is that really where we're headed?

Power is obscured through bureaucracy. Cutting through all of the complexity of accreditation, it amounts to saying the Trump administration wants to decide which schools are legitimate and not. That matters for who gets jobs, which degrees get recognized, etc. www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-s...

Another example of why DEI is light years better than anti-DEI. DEI gets a wider pool of qualified candidates; anti-DEI gets a corrupt pool of unqualified candidates. He's the poster child of anti-DEI so deep folks would rather risk natl defense than have diversity. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/20/u...

In case anyone wonders why college presidents capitulate so easily, it's because only the BoT can fire them. BoTs are almost entirely made up of very wealthy or powerful people. If they have to choose, they will protect the financial and reputational strength of the uni over its mission.

Universities around the world should consider boycotting US counterparts that capitulate. There should be some countervailing pressure so that there are reasons for university presidents and BoTs to not give in. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

It's unimaginable that immigration can still be a winning issue for Trump unless we're willing to admit the cruelty of our voters. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Fantastic news. I hope the book goes thrown at him. It'd be poetic justice for the (former) prosecutor-president. en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN2025...

It's time for a multi-polar world in which one nation's insanely selfish and self-destructive impulses don't threaten every other country on the planet. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/04...

I think I get it now. This administration wants their kids to be able to get an elite credential but with a Liberty University curriculum. Who cares about the actual education or research? www.nytimes.com/2025/03/31/u...

This is a positive development and one that was long overdue. Hopefully, it leads to necessary legislative actions and a truth commission on the US side, too, to investigate its organizations that created a transnational adoption market. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/26/w...

Another Project 2025 plan - take down NPR and PBS. The goal is to create vast swaths or rural America where the only perspective in broadcast media is a conservative one. Losing local news and center-political news helps no one in affected communities. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/25/b...

I'm not sure why this is news today, but I've been impressed by Max and his story since watching the mini-documentary on Netflix about speed cubers. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

I was forced to buy kimchi for the first time. I bought the best one according to various websites, but it's a poor imitation of the real thing. For a good recipe, try Maangchi's (except I'd personally recommend not adding sugar): www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTuc...

There will be no end. Capitulating will only provide temporary relief. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/21/n...

Is it vandalism. Sure. Arson? Looks like it. But terrorism?? If damage to property becomes considered terrorism, then that signals a widening definition that can have far-reaching implications. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPv2...
