Why are those who are so obviously benefitting from the status quo so angry about it? There has never been a better time to be a rich white guy. These maniacs are sitting on 20, shouting ‘twist.’

when writing about the rise of British populism it’s worth bearing in mind that voters still prefer Starmer to Farage… ….and even prefer Ed Davey to Farage

I'm getting a lot of love from Canadians on Facebook for saying nice things about Canada.

What is a 'super bowl'?

We took our two year old grandson to church last Sunday. He's used to church, just not our one, and he enlivened Communion by singing "Baby Shark"! 😀

Listening to the box set of Bob Dylan's 1974 concerts. So far the best is no.15, but the audience response to the NYC gigs is amazing. Of course, this is the Watergate era, so when he sings the 'President of the United States' line from 'It's Alright Ma', at every single gig Bob gets a huge cheer.

I had a very productive meeting with @dsdkings.bsky.social colleagues today - some exciting plans for the future, involving military history!

Labour getting on with the day job of implementing the recommendation from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse. This time over victims rights and support for victims. Remember: many of these recommendations sat there, unimplemented, for years by the Tories. www.gov.uk/government/n...

After years of neglect, Labour announce a record investment of £2.65bn to build new flood defence and maintain existing ones. Over 1000 projects will be helped, protecting 66,000 homes from flooding. It won't fix everything over night, but it's a step in the right direction to undo Tory damage.

The Royal Navy’s Naval Historical Branch is recruiting a full-time, permanent Historical Researcher! Details here: www.civilservicejobs.service.gov.uk/csr/index.cg...

Arsenal 5 Man115 City 1 - must admit, thought we might squeak it, but WOW!

OUT NOW: 'Our People’s War: Home Intelligence Reports and the Monitoring of British Morale, June 1941-December 1944' edited by our colleague Jeremy Crang @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social 'A remarkable collection of documents': www.bloomsbury.com/uk/our-peopl...

If you feel spending 2.5% or even 3% of the UK’s GDP on defence to be unaffordable, consider the price of falling victim to aggression. This year Ukraine will be committing 26.3% of its economy to the war

Yes, the government needs to go further, faster on concrete ways to improve the Brexit deal. But it is good, after so many years of top-down EU scepticism, to see 'make UK-EU ties stronger and deeper' the core of a press release like this. Full piece: https://buff.ly/4aGwQPf

If only there was a word that could be employed to sum up the proximate cause of this absolute headscratcher on the UK's international trade snafus. One that rhymes with Flex it, maybe www.ft.com/content/5452...

Please follow @dsdkings.bsky.social - proud to be a Visiting Professor there!

Well I never

Bloody woke Tories cuddling up to the French, no wonder they got kicked out.

Shall we talk about ship names? This whole non-story is a tiresome dog whistle. History is full of examples of ship names being changed prior to completion, because classes get reduced in number, something gets sunk in action, etc. But that’s not as much fun as waving the “woke” flag obviously.

Just read a description of Fussell's 'Great War & Modern Memory' as masterpiece. Hmmm

I have deleted my previous tweet, as Reeves never said that like this. 👇 (never post before your first coffee) The Times is deliberately misquoting her here. Shifting the Overton window further towards Trump. So the world is going mad, but maybe Reeves not yet. ;)

I’m no uncritical supporter of the current govt, but to all those racing to condemn Reeves from the “quote” reported in “The Times” she does not endorse Trump. In an answer, the full text of which we’re not given, she says we could use more positivity. You may be doing the work of the right for them

Easter Rising setbacks: St Stephen's Green and GPO museum closed because of Storm Eowyn. Still, having walked over 7 miles today, I saw most of what I wanted to see.

I'm doing some research visiting Easter Rising sites. Here is where the Sherwood Foresters were roughly handled at Mount St Bridge.

Looking forward to announcing the new @footballandwar.bsky.social events planned for the first part of 2025. It will be a mixture of exhibitions and talks with new partners and fascinating topics. Watch this space!
